Anatomy Scan Not Till 3rd Trimester?

I emailed my ob today because when I was in office two weeks ago I forgot to ask when they would schedule my anatiomy scan. I'm 20 weeks and I don't even see my doctor for another 2 or 3 weeks and they said I would have to talk to the doctor at my appointment to schedule l it. And that probably would take 2 or 3 more weeks... I want to start getting the nursery ready and start stocking up on clothing and I can't till they finally do the ultrasound. But they are being so slow with doing anything. I'm just so frustrated and want to get this done so I can prepare before I get too big because I will probably be on bed rest by the end because of my back problem.

  • a/s is typically at 18-20 weeks. You should be seeing your doc every 4 weeks. When was your last appt and what did he say then?
  • Loading the player...
  • The 11th of this month and he said nothing about it... And my next appointment is the 8th and I'll be 22 weeks at that.

  • Oh no no no. The a/s is for more than just finding out the sex. I wouldn't be OK with having it so late. I'd want it much earlier.

    That's frustrating!  I'd demand that you have the a/s as close to the general 18-20w window as possible (since you're already at 20w!) simply b/c that's standard procedure these days.

    Alternatively, do you have any other places around you where you can find out the sex? There's a place called Goldenview in our area that will (rather inexpensively) provide a 3D u/s and report the sex of the baby. But that still doesn't resolve the fact that the a/s is taking place really late.

    I would phone the office now and speak to someone directly about it. Request the scan, and if they refuse, ask to speak directly to the doctor. All mine had to do was fill out a form requesting the scan and then I could book it for whenever I wanted. My midwives gave me my form at my 11 week appointment, with a note that I could book it any time between 18-20 weeks.

    You do not need an appointment to get a referral, he could just fill out the form and you could pick it up I assume.
  • Who did you speak with? If it's the person who schedules appointments...they know nothing! Call and speak with your doctors nurse/triage nurse. They are the ones who will actually do things for you and have knowledge.
  • I wouldn't be ok with that, so I would be callin' to make that clear. Like was said, the a/s isn't to find out the sex.  It's to check the health of the baby and make sure all is good, measuring fine, etc. I'd want to know that things were OK before the third trimester.

  • I would definetly call your doctors office and get things straightened out. How frustrating.
  • I agree with the PP, the desk girls/receptionists/whatever 9 times out of 10 know very little on what should be done and when, which is annoying since that's all they deal with all day. I would definitely speak to the nurse and demand to come in (if they do it in house) for a scan, or come in to pick up a script for elsewhere. I wouldn't mention that you want to know the sex so badly, because to them, that doesn't matter. Really push that you want to make sure that baby is measuring appropriately and looks healthy. Best of luck to you!
  • I emailed the nurse and she told me I had to wait till my appointment and I know it checks all that but they will also check for sex. I don't have to money to go to the ultrasound places because they are far away an really pricey here.

  • Wow sorry to hear that deff call the office. I was in at 14 weeks and told him i would have to schedule my next visit for later than usual so he said ok im going to do your a/s paperwork now then and make sure you do it
  • Im on the same boat. When i asked abt the doc re my nxt ultrasound sked she just said that i can have it again by end september when id be like 24 months since i already had a pelvic u/s at 16w. Found it weird too.

    This sounds pretty ridiculous. Like everyone else has said, this scan is done between 18 and 22 weeks so waiting until your next appointment is not an option. Personally, I would be looking for a new doctor who is willing to offer you standard prenatal care.

    Regarding having the scan at other places - as long as it is not one of those elective boutique places (which can tell you nothing about the health of the baby), your insurance should still cover it. My scans are not done at the OB's office. I get sent to a perinatologist who also accepts my insurance.

    ~~~~~~ All Are Welcome ~~~~~~
  • There's no reason they have to see you before they order you're scan. It's a standard procedure for every pregnant woman. It's not like you're going in because you suspect you have a bladder infection and they have to see you first. I didn't even schedule mine through the OB, I called directly too the u/s scheduler
  • Call, not email. They are more likely to listen you you and not give a predetermined answer if you actually call and speak to a person.
