Pregnant after a Loss

new, 5 losses, scared :(

Hello ladies,
I wanted to cautiously say hi and ask for advice.  I am 35.  We adopted our oldest after 7 years ttc and 3 miscarriages.  We then had a son, another miscarraiage, and a daughter who is 15 months (this all took 5 years). I just a LIGHT BFP on Saturday on what I thought was 15 DPO.  I am so scared this is another loss because the test was faint and my only symptoms are slight cramps and back pain.  I don't really want to go through the stress of waiting for doubling betas and those awful phone calls.  I am thinking of just waiting a week or so, retesting and then calling the doctor if the test is darker.  Is there any harm in not going in for betas or early ultrasound?  After all my losses, I just don't want to get attached or hopeful!  I'm sorry if this post is scary to any of you!  I am really praying and crossing everything that this all works out but trying to be realistic too.  Thanks ladies and I hope to stay with you!

  • Congratulations and welcome. With this pregnancy my tests were light, I decided to walk away from the pee sticks. I did not have betas, I had them with my cp and found them very stressful. There is no right answer. For me just waiting it out was best. I went n at 8 weeks for a u/s I could have gone in at 6 weeks but just waited. Really hope it all goes well for you.

  • @writerkms I too have had losses. My statistics are similar to yours. We are pursuing adoption right now too as a matter of fact ;). Anyways there is no harm to going in but there could be harm to not. As RPL patient I know often they give Lovenex or other blood thinners or can prescribe progesterone if that is low etc. So there is no harm in coming in but it could be helpful :) Hugs to you! RPL is hard. I have no living children and I just feel like a failure at times. Like pregnancy is a magical mystical unicorn I just can't stick with...but anyway I am praying for this one so much! Never lose faith :) Do what's best for baby and go to doctor. At least then you can say "I did all I could". With my other pregnancies I did all I could and that gives me peace.

  • Along the lines of @christia10‌ wrote, I was thinking that your doctor may want to get progesterone and estradiol levels checked along with your betas. I certainly understand wanting to give it time, however.

Congrats on your positive test and welcome to the board!

  • Welcome and congrats! There's no harm in not getting betas done. IMO they are for reassurance and if they're not going to make you feel better about the pregnancy, regardless of the out come, than I would skip them. Were you on anything special while pregnant with your son and daughter? If not than there's really no reason to rush to call the doctor, except to get scheduled for an app. If you think you'll want an early u/s, I'd call sooner than later to make sure you can get in when you need to. I hope you have a H&H 9 months!

  • Congrats and I'm sorry for your losses! There is absolutely nothing that betas or early u/s can do for a pregnancy. They do not effect the outcome of the pregnancy. They are for you and your pgal mind. However, if they will cause more stress than anything, I say don't go. However, you may want to call the clinic to find out if they will want to test your progesterone levels (which is fairly common in a lot of clinics for women after 35, regardless of previous losses). Just because you get those levels done, does not mean you need to get betas or u/s if you're not quite ready. Good luck and I hope you stick around here!

  • I chose not to have betas done. I knew that it would just stress me out. I waited to have my dating ultrasound until I was far enough along that there should be a heartbeat (7.5 weeks). You do whatever you think will stress you out the least
