Cloth Diapering

Open pail?! .. um... fer real?!

So I just did a search for 'diaper pail' on this board (trying to figure out what to get) and read some older posts about how having an open pail is better.   Whaaa?!  Help me wrap my head around this...

Are we really saying that an open trash can (no lid) is the best way to keep smells down?  How can that be?  Wouldn't it just make the whole room/house smell?  Do the diapers have to be sprayed all the way clean first or something?

I read an article back a while ago that recommended a trash can with a good seal and a locking lid.  So which is better?  I was originally thinking I'd go with this one..

What do you guys use?

  • I only use a hanging wet bag but it's always unzipped. If not it smells awful. Airflow is key.

  • We use the Ubbi diaper pail (gifted to us), and while the lid is shut (to keep the pail liner secured in place), we never close the sliding top lid.

  • Yeah you need it to be open. If you seal it up, the smells just get super concentrated and funky. Airflow is key. We use a pail liner in a laundry basket right next to the washer and next to the baby's changing table in her room.

  • My over night diapers are the only thing that really smells.  And as long as I spray them down in the morning it's all good.

And anything with poop get's sprayed down well before it goes in the bag.

    Plus Newborn poop is nothing.

  • ok I guess I can get on board with this.  I'm still a little uncomfortable with no lid though.... would something like this work?  Would there be enough air flow even with the lid?  How air-permeable are planet wise liners?  I wish I could find one like this but with a foot pedal.

  • Same as all PP.  Leave the lid off, I promise it is better.  I spray poop diapers and ON diapers.

  • PW pail liners are waterproof, and therefore, pretty air tight as well, unless you leave it open. So I would think that the lid is going to keep the diapers from the needed airflow if they are in a waterproof bag.

  • ok ok I'll skip the lid!  Makes me nervous, but I'll trust you guys!
  • Terrible things happen in an anaerobic environment. Terrible, terrible things.

Take shoes for example. If you have a pair of shoes that breathes, they probably don't smell nearly as bad as a pair of shoes that is made of some waterproof synthetic material that doesn't breathe. I don't remember enough chemistry to be able to explain why this is. But hopefully you can relate.

We use a Simplehuman locking step can with kissaluvs pail liners. The lock was good for keeping my toddler out of it, until recently. Still, it gets plenty of airflow.

A hanging wet bag is also a good option if your space allows.

Didn't read the other posts...but DO NOT get the diaper Dekor can. It's basically the worst choice for cloth

  • Big no on the dakor! It allows zero air flow. I have one that I used at first for diposables, and although no smell escaped, you couldn't breath while emptying it. I tryed it for two days with cloth and I instantly stopped! The smell swamped her room every time I added a diaper. An open top trash can is really the best thing, her room hasn't smelled since I switched. The dakor is now the trash can for her room.

  • Just wanted to add that my original reason for going with the locking lid was that I wasn't sure how the dog would behave around the diapers. But the dog has not been an issue.
  • I have a plastic garbage can that has a lid but it opens in the middle. I don't know how to describe it. I can just throw the diaper in the middle and it falls in. So it's not airtight. I feel like I can sometimes smell poop in my son's room, so maybe I should just leave the lid off.  But it's not like an overpowering smell or anything. I also have a really sensitive nose.

  • Team open pail. I like the idea of the lid with holes though. Mainly cause Jo now wants to grab the dirty diapers that are on top....

  • I might be in the minority, but I like large, unzippered hanging wet bags much better than pails and liners. Space saver, and no stink.

  • We've had an open pail for two years. Occasionally I notice a faint odor lingering from a dirty diaper, but not for long. It's really not a problem at all.
