  • Its illegal in Maryland. I mean, you could do it, but you’re not allowed to have a mid wife or anything, they would get in trouble, so it would be a huge risk for the safty of the baby. Goodluck!

  • Just a cautionary tale regarding twins.

I had a c-section, against all my protesting despite wanting a vaginal birth (not a home birth though). Baby A was head down, Baby B was transverse. I tried to no avail to switch doctors at 37 weeks because they refused to do a vaginal twin birth but eventually I gave in and had the c-section.
During the surgery Baby A was taken out and perfect. He cried right away.
Baby B was taken out and the last I remember was panic, silence and the sheet being moved up so I could see nothing.
Long story short, baby B had the cord around his neck six times. He had not long before he would have been strangled to death.
Had I had the vaginal birth I wanted, Baby A would have come out head down but Baby B would have been further strangled in the struggle and most likely been stillborn.
I understand this is an extreme example but I thank the stars every day I listed and did the c-section. I would have had to have labored, delivered vaginally and then needed a c-section for the second baby (and his loss of oxygen would have been a tragedy).
Either way, though I did not have the vaginal delivery I wanted...being in a hospital saved my baby. Twins have less room and a higher percentage of cord complications. Women have vaginal twin births every day, but doing so at home is where I would seriously reconsider.
Goodluck with whatever you choose, but personally I would never attempt this with twins. Keep us posted!

  • I had a HB with my son and am planning another. Here's a practical tip: your midwife probably told you to prepare the be by making it up nicely, then putting a plastic sheet or shower curtain down and then an old fitted sheet on top. All good advice, makes it very easy to transition into a clean bed. However, plastic smells, especially vital shower curtains. Take it out of the package and let it off gas outside for a few weeks so that you're not overwhelmed by fumes while labor ing.

@TwinningMama22 - is your midwife a CPM? Some midwives are comfortable attending breech and multiples, but for many it falls outside the scope of their practice. There are some doctors that support it if mom meets certain criteria, but these doctors are few and far between. Attending breech and twin births just isn't a skill many are trained to manage and address. Lack of skill and training means it can't be offered as an option.

I know mamas that have vaginally birthed breech and twin babies, and they had very skilled providers attending. Is your provider trained in handling a vaginal twin birth?

A friend of mine who delivered her fourth and fifth babies at home planned a vaginal birth with triplets. She was dead set on it. She made it to 38 weeks. Yes, 38 with triplets. Pretty damn amazing. The delivery suite was set up in the OR in case c-section became necessary. Baby A was delivered vaginally, and the other two by c-section due to their positions.

  • I had a home water birth with DD. It was great! I wish I could have a homebirth again, but we live in a very small second floor apartment in a very old building and can hear our neighbors sneeze... so that is a no go.
