Breast Augmentation effect on breastfeeding

Hello Everyone,

I had a breast augmentation in June 2011 and I am really scared that I won't be able to breastfeed. It is a decision I am now regretting even though I asked about it before the surgery. I honestly can't remember exactly what the doctor told me but I think it was something along the lines of "It shouldn't affect your ability to breastfeed but there is a risk that it might."  My incision was periareolar and I have a scar around the entire areola on both sides. I was just wondering if any STMs had this surgery and what their experience was with breastfeeding. I reeeeally want to be able to breastfeed and I know there is nothing I can do now, I am just trying to prepare myself. I have looked at pictures of where the milk ducts are and it is hard for me to imagine that the ducts would not have been damaged in the process. My implants are under the muscle however, which I know is better... I am just worried about the incision.

  • I think @stargirlb posted some research on this a week or two ago but I can't remember the name of that thread - sorry!

I think the bottom line is that there was no definitive answer bc some women could and some couldn't. If you can't or have low supply, my aunt used this thing that went on her neck and had formula in it ... Her babies still nursed but they got formula .... She still got to experience nursing. Hope that helps a little!

  • I don't really know much about it but I had a friend who got implants and she breastfed.

  • Were your areolas removed? The reason I ask is because I wanted to get a lift at one point, but found that the "keyhole" cut method most often used would require the entire areola be removed then reattached and was told it would affect the ability to BF. It made sense to wait until I was done having kids. Have you asked your surgeon?

My friend had an augmentation too, but I think they put the implant below her muscle and via her nipple, she BF'd 2 kids with no issues.
  • If your surgery was performed correctly, it would have no impact on your ability to breastfeed since the ducts and glandular tissue would not have been touched.
  • And it does not make a difference whether or not it was over or under the muscle
  • "Dr. Jeffrey Salomon, an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, said breast implants do not interfere with a women's ability to breast-feed. The implants are placed under the breast gland, either above or under the pectoralis muscle, he said.

"There is no disruption of the breast gland or the milk ducts to the nipple in either instance," Salomon said."

  • I had a breast reduction and had a hard time breast feeding...my milk did not come in well and I has issues with my nipples. I used a device that was basically a fake nipple and a bottle of milk but it just wasn't the same...
  • @Stargirlb‌ Thanks for your responses. Is this true even if the incision was made all the way around the nipple/areolas? I hope so. I know the implants themselves don't cause any problems, I'm just worried about what was cut during the procedure. Thanks again!
  • My incision was under the armpit so its not the quite the same but I had no problems. But just so you know breastfeeding is really hard sometimes (latch, flow issues, engorgement, supply, etc). If you are unable to BF don't be to hard on yourself. I have mom friends who have done both ways and their babies are all healthy and happy.
