Dehydration- How long does it take to recover?

On Saturday, I did a long run in weather that was extremely hot and humid. I got nauseous and stopped drinking gatorade like an amateur (aka an idiot). When I finished my run I was SPENT. I spent the entire day in bed with a headache, feeling nauseous, dizzy, and exhausted, and Saturday evening I had several contractions. I didn't go to the hospital or call my doctor because I felt like as long as I drank a lot of fluid and as long as those few contractions weren't consistent or frequent I'd be ok. Then yesterday I still had a horrid headache and was so tired I could barely get out of bed. I figure that it just takes longer for me to recover these days. Today I'm still spent (but no headache or anything- I'm just not hungry), all i want to do is go home from work and sleep. Has anyone else gotten too dehydrated or overheated? I'm still regularly feeling the baby move so I'm not really that worried about the baby but I'm worried that maybe I should have gone to the doctor or something. How long do these symptoms usually last?

  • so now you are just exhausted? Keep drinking lots of water and get lots of rest. Listen to your body. Don't try to go out and do more until you are feeling completely strong and good. I learned that lesson last time... I pushed myself through my run/workout despite feeling exhausted, then continued to push through while feeling a bit sick, and then I got SHINGLES.

  • Yeah, today it's just exhaustion. All signs point to being rehydrated but my body still hates me. God I hate the south in the summer.

  • remember you will heat and dehydrate soooo much faster while pregnant. Your old limits do not apply. Stick to early morning or evenings. No need to be running in the middle of a hot day while prego, imo.
  • HAHAH I went at 5:30am-7:30am. I just have to drink 3x's as much as I used to in order to stay ahead of it. I knew it, I just didnt for some reason on Saturday. Womp. Womp. Lesson learned.

remember, you have the postpartum to look forward to for running too. It is AMAZING how much better you can get after having a baby, especially in the first year. Someone was telling me the other day that pregnancy/postpartum has a natural 'blood dopping' type effect so women athletes often become superwomen athletes after giving birth. That was true for me-- my 10k time improved by 6 minutes by the time my daughter was a year old, without any super special extra training, just going to stroller stride class.

    omg ok yeah... lol
  • I hope you feel better! Rest and take it easy, and keep drinking plenty of fluids.

  • Are you only rehydrating with water? Maybe you have a sodium imbalance and that is why you still feel off?

I've been drinking lots of things but mostly water. I'll pop a couple of salt tabs and see if that helps.

  • Personally speaking... if you feel this way still tomorrow, I would call.  You may need some help. I was dehydrated a bit ago and I drink 100oz of water a day, and I'm pretty sure I had 120 the day I was dehydrated and hospitalized.  So no amount of water appeared to be helping me.  They gave fluids in hospital and I started feeling better rather quickly, and was 100% fine the next day.

I won't ever mess with that crap again.
I hope you feel better soon!

  • I used to get this way occasionally after a long run on a hot day, even before pregnant.  I have not been running much lately, but  I can imagine pregnancy would just make it that much worse.  If you don't feel better by tomorrow, I would consider calling your doctor, just to see what they say.
  • It's a lot harder to be come rehydrated when pregnant.  It's not exactly something I would mess around with.  I ended up in the hospital again a few weeks ago to get fluids because of dehydration.  You're body will just get to a point where water/Gatorade will not really help.

  • This happened to me last week after setting up my classroom all day in the heat (not even working out!) and I had a few contractions and I called and they told me to do exactly what you're doing now. It took me a couple of days to feel better. I agree, if things aren't better by tomorrow, I would just check in with your doctor. Feel better!

  • What a tough few days. I'm glad you're starting to feel a bit better. Do you usually rehydrate with plain water? I like Nuun tabs. More than Gatorade.
