Parenting books

FTM here. So there have been times on this board that I've read something you need to know about babies that I didn't know (ex. that you can't put the baby in a coat while they are in the car seat). These times, of course, lead me into a panic. I now really want to get a good parenting book just so I know those basics (not really a parenting style type thing, just basic dos and don'ts). Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • What to expect the first year is great

  • Happiest Baby on the Block. This book won't give you safety tips, but I found it to be very helpful, particularly for the first few months.

  • No advice but i'm glad you posted this. I was thinking about the same thing the other day. I'm hoping my doc will help with when does a baby go to cereals and then solids what developmental milestones do I need to watch for and when. I nannied for my neice and watched her alot but am realizing how much I didn't learn from that.

  • THIS book was a mind-saver for me.

Your Baby's First Year Week by Week

You are going to make it up as you go along for the first few years.  That's normal.   Surround yourself with other moms - that's where your greatest resource will lie.

Honestly most of these things I learned from other moms on TB. So stick around and a million of these things will get hashed out. How many oz is too much, cereal, baby lead weaning, teething tips and tricks, fevers, rashes, EVERYTHING! ! That's why I love these boards. There are so many people with different parenting styles that you can keep what you like and leave the rest. I've really learned a lot on these boards and parenting/sahm

Eta: books will give you more milestones and medical stuff. The boards will go through philosophies and lifestyle stuff as well as different parenting methods. Like I would have never known about wonder weeks. And that's only 1 small example of the millions of things that get brought up.

  • I just got What to Expect The First Year today. My mom asked me I over breakfast today if I was ready for everything. "Uhm. No."

I was given that book when I left the hospital after having my lad.

    For free?! Damn it, Target!
  • Honestly, even though I had a ton of experience with children given my nanny and teaching backgrounds, I truly didn't learn everything I know UNTIL I was pregnant and having a baby of my own. And I'm still learning!

Keep up with the bump (and hopefully fb if we ever get around to making a group) and you'll learn as you go. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Follow mommy blogs. Your best resources are going to be real people. So many books are biased and/or outdated. You'll learn as you go, promise. :)
