High-Risk Pregnancy

New to Group: Progesterone Question

Hello. I am not sure if this is the right group so I apologize if not.

I went through 2 miscarraiges in the last year and after months of testing we have learned that I have hypothroydism (now under control with medication), pollup (surgically removed), extremely low AMH for my age (.09) and significant Ludeal Phase Defect in which I do not produce progesterone. Whew..it's a lot to think about but all manageable I believe.

My doctor has started me on 5 days of Clomid and after I begin to ovulate I will then start progesterone suppositories 4 days later. My question is if anyone else has used these supositories (Crinone 8%) and were you successful? If I am to get pregnant again I would need to be on it for 10 weeks. However insurance does not cover it and it is $75-$100 a week so we are looking at $750-$1000 out of pocket.  I was curious people's thoughts on switching to the progesterone shots because those are generic and may be cheaper.

Any advice is appreciated. It's very overwhelming and confusing even with my amazing reproductive endochronologist.

  • I'm on progesterone pills. Crinone wasn't covered by my ins either. It's $35 with insurance/ month. So far, I've been able to get to 18 weeks with them! Wishing you the best of luck!

  • I was on Crinone for the first 12 weeks.  My progesterone level was not extremely low (17) so I think my doctor was just being extra careful.  I am now at 20 weeks and everything looks fine, but I guess it's hard to say for sure if the Crinone did anything, or if it would have been fine anyway.  Luckily, my insurance covered most of it (I think I paid $25/month, but I was only on it for about 2 months).
It is not fun to use, but not awful.  Just be prepared- you may have some dried blood-looking stuff.  I did and it freaked me out, but my doctor said it is a common side effect since the suppositories can irritate the cervix.
    Good luck!@
  • I've been on every type of progesterone there is. Needles don't bother me after years of IVF so I had no problem with progesterone in oil injections. PIO is far cheaper than crinone and with crinone, you get a nasty build-up of it in your vag that you need to clean out every few days (it's a cottage cheese consistency that is left over from the gel). PIO can be tested in your blood while crinone really doesn't show up in a blood test.

  • Thank you guys for the feedback! I spoke with my doctor yesterday and becuase of the cost of the crinone he is going to put me on a different prescription. He wants to try that before we go to the shots. I appreciate all of your feedback and wish everyone the best of luck!
