C and I visited a lawyer yesterday with my mom in tow. (We are very fortunate to have supportive family!)
We were hoping to get her a guardianship or some type of custody arrangement since second parent adoptions are not done in our state. I guess I should have done more research because I didn't realize that second parent adoptions are possible if we go through Florida to get it done.
C can have her name on the birth certificate! She will be a full and legal parent regardless of our state.
It'll take two lawyers offices, a home study, a court date in Miami (which we can testify at over the phone or skype to save travel once Callie is here!) and a chunk of change, but C will legally be an equal parent.
I cried at the table. My mom cried at the table. C welled up but did her best to hold it together. C has always been this baby's Mom. Will always be this baby's Mom. How wonderful to have that recognized legally.
If everything goes well, everything will be final six weeks after our little girl arrives!
