Anyone planning on VBAC?

I would love to VBAC this time around. My Dr doesn't think it's a good idea, but I think it's just an easier route for them to do c-secti With my DS(3yrs) I didn't progress for 14+ hours, only dilated to a 3 that entire time. We had to make the decision to have a c-section so that he was safe. I just hated being THAT medicated and not remembering part of his birth. Not to mention the recovery!

I had a medically necessary, but non - emergent c-section last time and it went wonderfully. I was fully awake and remember the whole birth. Though I had a great experience I was still very disappointed to end up with a c-section instead of a vaginal birth. So we are hopefully going the VBAC route this time assuming everything looks ok and it is safe to do so. My CNM is very supportive of this thankfully. Did your doctor give you any specific reason why they do not think a VBAC is a good idea? I believe the success of a VBAC is partly dependent on having a supportive provider who won't just try to force you into a RCS without cause.

  • On the one hand, waaaay to many unnecessary c-sections are performed in this country. It's kind of insane. I had a friend whose doctor convinced her to schedule a c-section because HE HAD A GOLF TOURNAMENT. Unacceptable. I was livid for her. They should only be performed if they are medically necessary or if the mother advocates for one for whatever reason. They should never be done for convenience. But they are, frequently.

That being said, some hospitals don't allow for VBACS. Mine doesn't, you have to drive to another hospital in another city an hour or so away because VBACS are considered too high-risk. So if I were you, I would try to find out why, exactly, your doctor thinks you should have an RCS and what the policies are for the hospital you plan to deliver in. Then make an educated decision from there - it might be that his hands are tied, and it might be that you need to find another care provider who is willing to help you with a VBAC.
  • This will be my second VBAC. I had to fight for my last one but it went extremely well.

  • I am hoping for a VBAC, however my husband wants me to schedule a c-sec. DS was delivered at 34 weeks due to IUGR and PIH. He was in distress so my doc recommended c-sec which we did. She said he would not have faired well for me being induced and was glad we decided that sense his cord was very short (1/3 what is should be)...other than that, if all goes well this pregnancy, she said there is no reason I shouldn't be able to VBAC.

What DH doesn't understand is that I feel robbed of the end of my pregnancy. I don't know what a contraction feels like or what it feels like to be uncomfortably pregnant. I delivered a preemie who spent a month in the hospital and came home with medical issues. He is healthy today, which I am so thankful for. I will do whatever the doc says, but am hoping for a VBAC...

  • Unfortunately no :( With DS#1, I ended up with an emergency c/s after 3 hours of pushing because his head just wouldn't fit through my pelvis. I also endured several uterine tears during the surgery because he was so wedged in there.

Due to my small pelvis and the uterine tears, my doc highly recommends a routine c/s. I am considering changing docs for the simple fact that a new branch opened up right down the street from me that delivers at the same hospital, so I will most likely get a 2nd opinion, but it's not looking too promising.

I have heard that a routine c/s is much less traumatic and an easier recovery than an emergency one or one that occurs after laboring. Like you, I was so loopy and drugged up I hardly remember my family meeting him or the first night with him. I will be requesting that they not give me morphine this go around as It makes me too out of it to enjoy the experience.
