Trouble TTC

Celiac Disease and MFI?

So I got my second opinion yesterday and this RE asked me what MH was tested for in his BW. He said to make sure he was tested for Celiac and Hemochromatosis. He was tested for all the other things on the list, Hormones and STDs (they all came back normal). However, he wasn't tested for these two. Has anybody heard of these affecting MFI? My current RE says they don't usually test for these.

My DH has hemochromatosis. It was never tested by our first RE, or the urologist (one of the best for MFI in North America). It's fairly easy to screen for, as it's just a matter of testing the levels of iron in the bloodstream. It's also fairly easy to treat (donate blood!) so it's worth testing for. It can definitely affect MFI, so if it's something you can treat and it might help, then why not, right?

Personally, there were too many other issues with DHs sperm for treatment for it to have a positive enough effect to do IUI, so we continued with IVF/ICSI. Also, DH is super stubborn and after (what seems like) a million other treatments that we tried, he refused to do any more. I guess I just have to accept that, since it's his body. I was ready to move on too.

  • @tptbabe‌ I totally agree, if it's something that is treatable why not test for it? I'm thinking This is a sign to switch REs. I've been going back and forth with it but, this guy seems way more thorough.

  • Even just a second opinion is a good idea! We ended up switching because our old RE was more interested in just throwing IVF at us, rather than trying to figure out what the issue behind it was. Sure, we ended up doing IVF in the end anyways, but we figured that an RE that cared about health more than the almighty dollar, would be a better fit for us, and for our treatment.

  • BTW, we've heard of a possible MFI and celiac link so my DH (a physician himself) initiated a blood test. (He also had other gastro symptoms that we thought might be related.) It's an easy initial test, so we thought worth doing. (If blood test indicates possible celiac, then there is a follow up test that's more intrusive). But: it was negative.

If celiac MFI, then could go away with a gluten-free diet over time. (We saw some anecdotal cases.) You might have to decide then how long you're willing to wait.

  • @tptbabe‌ that's how I feel about my current RE, she's just throwing things out there, and if this was checked back in April when he was initially tested maybe we could have worked on it, if it's the problem. @MrsLolaSky‌ it could go away but now I don't have the time to wait, even if it is the case, I'm not waiting only to find out I still have to move forward with IVF, then I've wasted 3 more months. Just pissed as hell that my current RE didn't test for these things months ago, especially after seeing his poor SA.

I hear you @Hollowvic…. I hate that about MFI…. Everything is like: "Well… we could try this, but we have to wait 3 months to see if it works. It probably won't. Then if it doesn't, we can try this and wait 3 more months to see if that works…. [ETC]." So frustrating! My DH and I had bunch of talks about how many "3-6 month" periods we're willing to wait to see if there's enough improvement. It sounds like you guys have also had that talk and have made some decisions. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Good luck!

  • @MrsLolaSky‌ we talked about waiting 3 months but really, you just don't know with MFI!!! So frustrating!!! Thank you, FX for you as well, as I hope everyone graduates from this board! Even though I love the support.
