ER trip with morphine injections

I woke up at 4AM last night with the worst headache I've ever had and some truly horrible vomiting. My biological mom had pre-eclampsia so the night nurse at my hospital told me to come in just to be sure and to get some relief. My blood pressure was pretty high but after a few hours of monitoring and IV fluids, they said baby was doing great and they didn't see any other signs that would point to pre-eclampsia. They did give me a big injection of morphine and another drug to stop the vomiting before sending me home (where I slept nearly all day). Clearly they wouldn't have given it to me if they didn't think the benefits outweighed the risk, but has anyone else had to have morphine while pregnant? I'm kinda freaked out because I've been so out of it all day today and my LO seems to be more sluggish too. I'm worried I hurt him by going to the hospital but no amount of Tylenol was going to cut it.

I'm still pretty zoned so sorry if this doesn't make much sense but I'm just hoping for some reassurance and to know I'm not the only one who will be so happy to not be pregnant anymore. Thanks all!

  • No experience here either, just wanted to tell you I hope you feel better. Sorry you had a crazy night!
  • Oh my!! I'm so sorry you are going through this! I'm glad you are feeling okay.
I don't have any experience, but I'm sure the doctors know what they are doing. Hopefully, you can continue to rest and tomorrow you and LO will be feeling much better and moving all around!
  • I had morphine in the first tri and baby seems to be doing good I had severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
I know you've had a rough pregnancy too. Hope you are feeling better!

  • I had morphine at 8 weeks and LO is doing great now. I know, it seems so counterintuitive. We avoid caffeine and raw foods, and then at the hospital they're like "Here! Have some narcotics! It's totally fine." But he's still ok! Hope you are feeling better soon.

  • I hope you feel better soon. They do give you morphine when you have a c-sec so I know it doesnt do too much harm through bm at least but I never had any other than for the c-sec.

Right? On the sheet they gave me it even reminds me to avoid Advil, which almost seems silly now. But I guess a few shots of morphine once or twice is better than constant use of another drug.

  • I was given morphine in my 3rd tri during my last pregnancy because I fell and completely dislocated my hip, and other than knocking me out, all was fine. For the vomiting they probably gave you Phenergan (most common for nausea) and that is what my OB prescribed me for my m/s during my last 3 pregnancies.

I hope you get feeling better soon! Creepy (((hugs)))

  • I was given morphine for some pinched nerve thing during my first pregnancy. He was born perfectly healthy and is really advanced for a two and a half year old (according to his teachers. I honestly don't know how much that means when they are that young, but whatev.)

It might make baby a little sleepy (and you a little woosey) while your system processes it, but everyone will be fine in the end. Don't stress.

When I was admitted to the hospital about a month ago for the abdominal pain, one of the medications that they gave me was dilaudid (several times) and based on my 5 minute google search it is a stronger style med that is a morphine derivative.  They also released me with a prescription of Norco.

That was about 18 weeks.   Since then I had my AS at 21 weeks with everything looking normal and have felt the LO kicking.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  • That sounds miserable! So sorry. From what I recall, morphine has a relatively short half life. Which means it leave your system fairly quickly. It makes some sense that both of you might be a little sluggish. If you're feeling really concerned, I'd put a call into your OBs on-call. Feel better soon!

  • I had a severe migraine at 14 weeks and had to have TWO rounds of morphine before the pain went away. I was so worried but the Dr assured me the benefits outweighed the risks.

So far, so good with this little guy!!

I never had migraines before pregnancy so they have taken me completely off guard. My heart really goes out to those who have these regularly. Glad to hear yours got better eventually and your LO is doing well!

  • I'm sorry you went through this! I was given morophine when I was 32 weeks. I was home by myself and dislocated my knee. When the paramedics came they told me they were going to give me morophine and I flipped out and was crying and told them I was scared to have any drugs because I was pregnant but they told me it was safe and that I couldn't be moved without the pain meds (which was totally true because I could hardly breathe I was in so much pain). The hospital have me other drugs too and sent me home after they fixed me up and I threw up the whole rest of the day/night. I'm very sensitive to pain meds though. I know it's scary taking heavy drugs but if it wasn't safe they wouldn't have given it to you. Hope your feeling better!
  • Oh yeah...with the pain meds be sure to ask for the anti- nausea meds and colace right away.

  • I am so sorry. I wouldn't worry too much about the morphine. When my son was in the NICU they use to give him morphine to keep him comfortable. He was 25 to 29 weeks getting doses. If you take morphine everyday there is a risk.of addiction and all the implications that come with it, but this was just one day. Feel better.
  • I just got out of the hospital after having my gallbladder removed last Tuesday at 25 weeks. Because I had to have open surgery (opposed to laparoscopy) I was in a lot of pain and they ended up putting me on a morphine pump. I think I was on it for 2days. I had multiple ultrasounds and baby is completely fine, thank God! I was worried about it too, but I was in the OB special care unit and I knew they wouldn't have given me the morphine if it was too dangerous for baby.

I hope that helps a bit and you feel better! T&Ps <3
  • I had morphine during the delivery of my son, because I was having a gallbladder attack, & I had fallen down the stairs the night before and had broken my tailbone and ripped a tendon in my knee.
  • Im sorry hon. I hope you feel better. Im sure the doctors felt it was safe. Thoughts and prayers. I wish all pregnancies were stress and pain free!!!!! :(
  • No experience, but I hope you feel better! Glad to hear its not preeclampsia and that LO is doing good!

  • I hope you feel better soon! My thoughts are with you and your little one.

My mom had morphine during her second trimester with me and I grew up healthy and happy.

FX this is the only bump in the road for you. However - I think if it were me I would ask my OB to prescribe me some of those pee sticks that monitor urine protein levels (purely out of an abundance of caution). You are headed for med school right? Can you teach DH to take your BP regularly? I'd be on that too (again, I'm paranoid).
I didn't think about this but it's a good idea! Better safe than sorry. Besides, I'm paranoid too :P
