DF & night terrors.

So my DF has night terrors, walks in his sleep, talks in his sleep, the whole nine yards.
I feel kind of dumb for asking this question, but is it possible that my LO could get those as well, just like DF?
DF says they were much worse when he was a kid, and literally scared him out of going to sleep sometimes. I don't want that for my baby girl :(

What are some good ways to deal with them?
For DF I lay out water around the house, because when he drinks it in his sleep he'll wake up and I don't have to worry about the shock it puts him in or anything. I'm nervous to do that for my LO because DF said when he was younger it didn't work, it just made him pee everywhere. So, any advice or anyone have any education on dreams/sleep walking/talking/night terrors?

Re: DF & night terrors.

  • I think it is genetic, I feel like I've read that before. But don't quote me :) Although I sleep walk occasionally and neither of my parents do.

  • Talk to your pediatrician about it. It is fairly common and most kids grow out of it.

I had terrible night terrors and sleep walking as a child but so far my two kiddos haven't shown any signs of it. I do occasionally get them as an adult but it is usually a sign I am stressed out.
  • I'm not sure I had terrors as a child but I seem to get them every few months as a adult. My husband does usually gently wake me from them as I'm usually screaming and will be disoriented for a short time but the "shock" has never hurt me. I have walked and talked in my sleep since before I can remember though. To my knowledge no one else in my family deals with this.

  • Have DF go to a sleep specialist if they have not already.  They do have sleep specialists for kids as well.

  • If it helps when I was a kid the worst sleepwalking I did was ask if I could play Super Nintendo at 3am and I made my bed in the middle of the night once :-?? I know it would be worrisome to have my child do it too though.
