So I got my second opinion yesterday and this RE asked me what MH was tested for in his BW. He said to make sure he was tested for Celiac and Hemochromatosis. He was tested for all the other things on the list, Hormones and STDs (they all came back normal). However, he wasn't tested for these two. Has anybody heard of these affecting MFI? My current RE says they don't usually test for these.

Re: Celiac Disease and MFI?

My DH has hemochromatosis. It was never tested by our first RE, or the urologist (one of the best for MFI in North America). It's fairly easy to screen for, as it's just a matter of testing the levels of iron in the bloodstream. It's also fairly easy to treat (donate blood!) so it's worth testing for. It can definitely affect MFI, so if it's something you can treat and it might help, then why not, right?
Personally, there were too many other issues with DHs sperm for treatment for it to have a positive enough effect to do IUI, so we continued with IVF/ICSI. Also, DH is super stubborn and after (what seems like) a million other treatments that we tried, he refused to do any more. I guess I just have to accept that, since it's his body. I was ready to move on too.

Even just a second opinion is a good idea! We ended up switching because our old RE was more interested in just throwing IVF at us, rather than trying to figure out what the issue behind it was. Sure, we ended up doing IVF in the end anyways, but we figured that an RE that cared about health more than the almighty dollar, would be a better fit for us, and for our treatment.

If celiac MFI, then could go away with a gluten-free diet over time. (We saw some anecdotal cases.) You might have to decide then how long you're willing to wait.
