Fluoride toothpaste

Looks like the AAP is changing its recommendation against fluoride toothpaste for babies and toddlers, anyone else heard this from their pedi? As our next appointment isn't until late October I may call our dr and ask about this.

Re: Fluoride toothpaste

  • At DS's dental appt back in June he was given a sample of kid's toothpaste and we were told to smear some on his toothbrush. He likes it bc it tastes good. Although, he doesn't let me brush his teeth bc he wants to do it himself.

  • We have been using the fluoride drops so our Pedi said to continue those until they're gone and then switch to a fluoride toothpaste.  She said "they" are now recommending the fluoride go directly on the teeth.  We'll follow her advice until I can get to the dentist.
  • Our pedi has never recommended it and I purposely bought fluoride free toothpaste for him.
  • We are still fluoride free at the moment here. Our water (although we do filter it) is fluoridated though.

  • The baby toothpaste I use has a very small amount of fluoride in it (I got this from the dentist at her first 6mo check). Prior to this I used gum wipes without fluoride.

  • Our pedi recommended using toothpaste with fluoride at his 12 month appt & we've been using it since then.

@SpankingShank‌ you could try an electric toothbrush. DS refuses to let me brush his teeth but loves his Monsters Inc electric toothbrush :D

  • We still use a teether toothbrush. Its the onky thing he'll let us use. He plays with his actual toothbrush but brushes his lips and tongue mostly. No toothpaste here.

  • @SpankingShank‌ - yeah, I'd try an electric one and see if that works? Have you tried one of those finger brushes? If nothing else, will she let you wipe her teeth with a wet washcloth?

Not to compare Vi to a cat, but I was at the vet recently and they were playing a video in the waiting room about brushing your cat's teeth. They said to start small and build up to it. First couple of days, just wipe the front teeth for a few seconds, then gradually build up to longer brushes and getting all the teeth. Maybe that works on toddlers too?

My problem: V and E used to love getting their teeth brushed. Now they want to do it themselves and run around with the toothbrushes.
