Infant Carrier

Debating between the following infant car seats. Side impact protection is important since I have a late model car that does not have side air bags/curtains for the back seat. Also since we live in the city there is the distinct possibility that baby will be in the back of the cab and on public transportation.  Especially since last year's cold temps prevented my new car battery from turning over on a couple of occasions. I have not selected a stroller or travel system yet.

Yes... I am a little OCD have them in alpha order.

(Sorry I know this has been asked before. Just between reading Consumer Reports and Baby Bargains my mind is gone.)

  • I just voted for the one I registered for, so take my keyfit vote with a grain of salt.

  • We have a Baby Trend Flex-Loc. I needed a slim car seat that would fit in the seat with two other seats.

Yea, it's the #1 safest for a reason.  cost a fortune but it's your baby and aren't the worth the best protection you can give them?  (and yes, I shelled out for a britax too and feel she's safe sitting in it)

Going with the Chicco Keyfit 30 in the Solare pattern mainly because I like it and matches the pack n play and high chair I picked out. I've read in multiple places that they are all put through the same safety tests and only given a pass/fail rating. So if it's sold in stores, it passed. Just pick what you like the most.

Ditto this - we chose it based off a good friends recommendation.  Who knows how we will feel once we actually start using it.  Registered for the compatible stroller too.
  • We used Graco Snugride 30 and then moved on to Britax Marathon for forward/rear and then now a Baby Trend child seat.   I have been really happy with all 3 - especially the Britax, though that was by far the most expensive one of the 3.

  • We had a Graco Snugride for DDs first car seat and it did the job just fine. When she outgrew that we got a Chicco Nextfit and it's pretty incredible, definitely worth the money.

  • I went with the B-safe for us. I chose that in your poll because if you plan to have another child before this one is 4, the b-ready stroller would be great to convert into a double when ready.
  • We are using the same Chicco Keyfit 30 we used for DS.

Crash test results are not released so there is no way to know what seat rates the best.  The best seat is the one that fits your car and child the best.

  • We used the Graco Snugride for DD and will use again for this baby. No complaints!
  • I'm deciding between the Britax B-Safe and Maxi-Cosi Mico. The Maxi is much lighter, so that's tipping me in that direction, and feels much more comfortable.

  • We have the Britax for DS and love it. He'll outgrow it just in time for his little brother
  • Maxi-Cosi Mico for us! Lightest infant car seat available. :)
  • We registered for the Britax - I'm a FTM though, so not a lot of experience with it :) Did some research and after checking them out in the store, thought it was the best fit for us. We'll see though! :)

  • I did a TON of research before DD was born and ended up going with the Chicco Keyfit30. We'll use that seat for this baby as well. I loved it and can't say enough good things for an infant seat.

Though when we switched to convertibly seats, I opted for the Britax Boulevard.

  • My husband and I are getting te Cybex Aton 2 - it has been know for all the safety extras it has! It was also highly recommended! However, I don't know too much about the others - so I would definitely keep up the research and listening to other pp.

We are skipping the infant car seat and going for a convertible with a Snuzzler.
In case you plan on doing the same, I thought this website was useful.

  • I'm going for a nuna pipa.

We have an Orbit Baby for my car, a Cybex Aton Q for DH's car and a Nuna Pipa for my parents' cars. All car seats pass a MINIMUM requirement, but many of the more expensive ones have added safety features, for example leg loading bar, linear side impact protection, etc. So passing minimum safety requirements does not mean they are all created equally.

  • We registered for the chicco keyfit since it was the one that fit best in H's pickup. We tried that and the graco, didn't even bother with the britax since it's so much longer and the backseat of the pickup isn't wide enough

I feel like I've heard that the snuzzler isn't safe for use in a car seat during actual driving. Am I making this up? Does anyone know more about this?
I believe most car seats will state that using anything like the snuzzler would void the warranty. Although I believe there are a bunch of convertible seats that are made to fit newborns.

  • We have the Chicco Keyfit 30 for an infant carrier and really liked it.  Our convertible is a Britax Marathon which we like, but I wish I had looked into ones for RFing even longer (we had to turn DD at 2.5 because she outgrew the RFing limits.)

  • I think Britax, Chicco, and Graco are all rated pretty similar.  I had too debated long and hard between Chicco and Britax since they are both rated high by consumers and other rating systems.  Initially, I was leaning towards Britax due to cost (infant seat itself is about $40 cheaper; and the adapter for BJ City Select is also significantly cheaper); but after seeing it in person at the store, it was a clear win for Chicco.  I'm not sure if you were able to see both in person or not, but padding on chicco is way better than Britax IMO.

@Meether‌ - which do you prefer? I'm pretty set on the Nuna Pipa, but I'm considering the Aton 2 and the Maxi Cosi as well. Since you have two of them, what do you think? I'm particularly attracted to the fact that the Pipa is light and has that fabulous sun shade that extends all the way down.

We will be using the britax b-safe we used with DS. Only knock on it is the size. We got the chicco nextfit after DS outgrew the infant carrier and even as a convertible car seat it's smaller than the n-safe. I totally love the nextfit so it makes we wonder how great the keyfit might be. I'm very impressed with my chicco.
  • @RaeChay - That's my statement based on crash test comparisons across car seat manufacturers.  I'll try to find where I found that report.

Curious why you are buying 3 different infant seats.  Why not just buy additional bases of one seat for each car?
