Some dumb combo feeding and rice questions

Any good resources on combo feeding? I know some ladies on here do it. I'm clueless. Do you substitute entire bottles? Or combine BM and formula? I'm thinking I'm going to cut back on EBFing soon, especially one of my pumping sessions at work.

I'm also wondering about adding rice cereal to bottles? I've heard of that? Is anyone doing this? Is there a point? How much and how often?

I'm sorry for all the questions. And I haven't been very active lately, life has been crazy and LO hasn't been sleeping as much. We are trying to get into new routines.

Re: Some dumb combo feeding and rice questions

  • We combo fed from 4m-6m, as my supply was dropping drastically. I pumped and fed full bottles of BM, and added in formula for whatever I needed to make up for my lack of supply. By 6m, I was not even pumping enough for one bottle, so I gave up.

  • We combo feed by supplementing with formula at bed time. He gets two bottles -- 1bm 1f. I think you can do it however you want.

At this point, I wouldn't do rice in the bottle unless given a good reason by the pedi. Use a spoon!

  • kellymom has info on combo feeding. Here: https://kellymom.com/ages/weaning/wean-how/weaning-partial/

Generally speaking, it's not advised to mix formula/BM in a bottle so you'd do whole bottles of one or the other.

You should not put rice cereal in bottles outside of medically indicated situations (such as for treatment of reflux with Pedi guidance for amounts/etc).

  • Thanks for all the info ladies! The Kelly mom site was good. And glad to know rice doesn't go in the bottles, don't know where I got that from!
