Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Ectopic/methotrexate experiences?

My hcg levels are rising but not enough or regularly. My dr is increasingly worried that I may have an ectopic pregnancy. She wants me to go for a D&C Friday at 6w1d. If the tissue tested is inconclusive or not pregnancy tissue, then I will have methotrexate on Saturday. This has been two weeks of torture knowing something was wrong from the begining with my levels but no answers. I'm scared it's ectopic and will burst before having methotrexate or that methotrexate will be terrible.

If you had an ectopic pregnancy- how many weeks were you when you had it treated or had it burst? What side effects did you have from methotrexate if you had it?

TIA for sharing experiences. I can't research anymore or turn over questions in my head... I'll lose my mind. Just trying to push through and listen to my dr :(

Re: Ectopic/methotrexate experiences?

  • I haven't had an ectopic, but I wanted to say I'm sorry you're having to go through this. There is an advice and experience thread posted at the top. HERE is the ectopic thread. Only one person has shared her story so far, but it's there if you want to read it and has some good information.

Good luck with the D&C. I hope it goes smoothly.

  • Hi There, I am so sorry you have to go through this also:( Like you, I really didn't see much on this board about ectopic pregnancies. I hope I can help.

I found out about  3 weeks ago my pregnancy  was ectopic. I was 6 weeks. I went in the hospital on a Friday complaining of pain on my right side and bleeding. My levels were low, only about 500. By Tuesday I was back getting the methotrexate shot to make sure I didn't rupture.

After the methotrexate I continued to bleed like I had been for a few days and didn't feel much different. And then when Saturday came I wokeup in the morning with period like cramps. By the evening I was in a ton of pain, laying on the bathroom floor. I passed a few small clots and then one large one, about the size of a plum. It was awful. But by the morning it was over and next time I had my levels tested they were 85. Today my levels officially came back zero.

I had a hard time dealing with this loss but am slowly moving on from it the best I can. If you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to ask.

  • That sounds painful. I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing. Did the methotrexate make you feel ill/nauseus? Was it just one shot?
  • My levels were low enough that I only needed it one time. It was two shots at once. The methotrexate did not make me feel sick or ill like I thought it would.
