SS: Prevacid users - constipation?

Dd is on Prevacid and it's working well, but makes her terribly constipated. We were instructed to do prune juice twice a day but it only works so-so. I sometimes end up having to "help" her with a thermometer. She's in absolute misery for days until she goes, then is okay for a few and the misery starts again. I don't want her to be dependent on a thermometer. Anyone else have the same problem with Prevacid? What were you instructed to do? Btw, I have a call into her GI, but won't hear back until tomorrow. Just wondering what other docs are doing. Tia!

  • Hmm, DS is on Prevacid and poops up to 3 times a day. Maybe it's different for every baby? Sorry I can't help, but hopefully your GI has good advice.

I'm soooo jealous!  Well, and so is dd.  She poops the consistency of thick toothpaste when she finally goes.  Even with the prune juice.  Thanks so much for the response. :)

  • I don't think it's the medicine. DS went through a week or so of that. It's just their intestines maturing. They might struggle a bit... And I agree it's heart wrenching, but it's normal. Also normal to only go once a day or every two days. She isn't constipated unless the poo is hard and pellet like.
  • Also I would avoid helping with the thermometer. I was told that was only a last resort kinda thing, and should not be done regularly. Gripe water seemed to be the biggest help for DS. And it DOES get better!
  • We are dealing with the same issue, but with zantac and formula. I think the ff is the root problem because it stated before the zantac. I was advised to spread the juice out, use less but put some in every bottle. So far that has really helped with gassiness, not so much with pooping. Hopefully we turn a corner soon!

  • Thanks ladies.
Dd will go many days without going and I know that it can be normal, but she actually cuts down on nursing because I think she is just so bloated and miserable. Ive been pumping here and to ensure I don't lose production for when she actually wants more (after she's gone).  It all started after she started Prevacid which was over a month ago.  Before she started the Prevacid she had typical breast milk poop. GI might switch her med so I'm just waiting to hear back.  Thanks again.
