Breastfeeding

Time to wean?

My LO is 13 months and I'm on the fence about how much longer to breastfeed. She's only nursing at wakeup and bedtime and I love the ease of it, the nutritional benefits, the snuggling. But part of me is ready to have my body back for a little while before TTGP again. Plus, there's the vain hope that I'll finally lose those last few pounds once she's weaned, and I'd like to do that before any trying for baby #2. I'm also traveling a lot this fall and having to drag my pump along with me makes me irrationally angry!

Anyone in a similar boat? Words of advice from BTDT moms? I'm afraid if I wean her soon I'll regret it and wish we could still nurse when together. I'm also afraid that if I wait several more months that it will be that much harder on my LO, who still seems to enjoy nursing when she's not being a little gymnast on the boob ...

Re: Time to wean?

  • if you're on the fence and think you might regret stopping now, i'd wait a little while. the older your LO gets, the easier it is to set limits RE nursing, IMO.

do you have a manual pump that you can take with you when you're traveling?

Thanks. I do have a manual pump, but when I'm traveling overnight I really do need the double electric. For some reason, pumping now takes me much longer than when I was pumping regularly. And it would take a crazy long time with the manual.
  • ah, that makes sense. what about hand expressing? it might be easier for you at this point than pumping. (i got mastitis when DS was about 18 months- i tried to pump at work to keep things flowing, but i could only get about 3 drops out. i just ended up hand-expressing in the bathroom and it was way more effective.)

Interesting and good to know. I never really got the hang of being able to hand express much but could give it another go. It takes me a long time with the double electric pump when I'm away from LO at wakeup or bedtime, but I get 5-6 oz, so worth doing, even though it drives me crazy!
