Partial previa?

At my a/s (19w3d), the obstetrician said my placenta was lying very low about 6mm from my cervix, and they'd like it to be at least 20mm away. Is this the same thing as partial previa? She didn't tell me much except that if it hasn't moved by 34 weeks I'll need a scheduled c-section. Any information or advice would be very welcome.

Re: Partial previa?

  • Thanks, yes, she said 75%, so most likely it will. I guess my main question is: is a low lying placenta the same thig as partial placenta previa? Or something different? I asked her if it was previa and she said no, that's when the cervix is totally covered. But I thought that was 'complete' previa and partial just meant the placenta was close to the cervix and potentially obscuring it? That seemed to be what some site were explaining but could be wrong. Maybe it means actually touching the cervix but not completely covering? So confused!

  • Mine is also low lying. She mentioned it being 6 mm away from my cervix. Low lying does not mean it is covering the cervix at all.

She did say ~90% of the time it migrates and is not an issue. I will need a repeat u/s around 32 weeks to check as well.

  • I had a partial previa with my first. They noticed it during the anatomy scan. By the next ultrasound it had moved. Hope yours does the same.

  • Mine goes right up to the cervix, but does not cover it.  They called it a marginal previa.  I was told it almost always moves prior to delivery.  I'm not at all concerned.

  • See here for a pretty simple visual representation. https://mom.exchange.ph/2012/12/08/dealing-with-placenta-praevia I have a low lying placenta (progress from complete previa). Likelihood of moving away from the "danger zone" is high at this point

  • Thank you very much, that's super helpful!
  • I have a marginal previa my doc said not to worry it usually always moves before delivery so you shouldn't worry too much about it.
