Hospital tour?

Ive heard alot about other people doing a hospital tour. I wanted to do that and make my birth plan and everything. But i also want to get a delivery doctor who will forsure be there for me on the time of delivery. The doctor i have right now may not be there or be available when i need him.

How do you work these things out?

    Oh really :/ that kinda sucks. Im a FTM so i want someone whos been there through my pregnancy. How about the hospital tour? How do i set that up?

    Have you seen Knocked Up? No doctor is going to guarantee he/she will be there for your delivery. Without a scheduled induction or c-section, you'll likely have to take the on call doctor. As for a hospital tour, just call to schedule.

    My hospital lets you tour whenever you want, but then my OB group has a "meet the doctors" night at the hospital. That way you meet all the doctors that could possibly be delivering your baby incase your OB is not available when the time comes. The "meet the doctor" night is next month so I will definitely make sure to attend.

    I think these are two different things.  My OB works in a practice with several others.  I will have whoever is on call when I deliver, I'm fine with that.  A hospital tour is usually done later in pregnancy to see the L&D floor, learn about hospital policies etc.

    I see a prenatel doctor. I just started seeing him as i became pregnant i only see him for my prenatels or when i have worries

    He said he could possibly be there to deliver my baby but hes a really busy doctor and im sure i wont be the only one in labour that day lol as babys choose when they want to come . As i will be having a all natural birth and not inducing or anything unless i go over

    Yes thats what i meant by prenatel appointments . Right now i have them every 4 weeks. Sorry for the mix up I meant thats the only doctor i see for my monthly visits

    I'm not sure I know what a prenatal dr is?! He's not an OB? And you should be having monthly visits.

    I see him at my walk-in clinic. He is specialized in prenatel care and hes and on call doctor at the hospital. I call them "prenatel appointments"

    Oh my goodness lol i feel so blonde!! Yes he is a OB thank you for clearing that up. There is 2 OBs where i am going, but i have only seen him throught my pregancy so far

    :) Yes, you would normally see a GYN when you're not pregnant, and an OB when you are. If there are two dr.'s in your practice, once of them should be delivering your baby. Since I would assume they would rotate schedules. You just need to check with them which hospital they are authorized to deliver at. BUT, as others have said, things happen. My dad practically delivered me because the hospital was so busy with deliveries and all the dr.'s who were available were already at the hospital delivering other babies.

    The mid-wives (MW) where I go have a "meet the midwives" once a month, since it just depends on which one is on call for your delivery. There are 9 MW in the practice, and I've seen three. They don't seem to have you see all of them before you deliver, like some practices do. It just depends on who is there when you have your appointment.

    For the hospital tour, my hospital has them fairly regularly (once a week/every other week), and if you sign up for the preparing for childbirth class then it includes a tour. DH and I are taking the class, so we'll be doing the tour then.

    Yeah i heard nurses can be pretty rude .. When my sister had her first baby the nurse didnt even explain anything to her during his first bath.. She just said "you should know this already" but being a firs time mom she didnt have very much expierence. Hope i get good nurses

    I dont have a midwife, but i was looking into getting one. I heard there the same as a OB but i also heard there so much better. Whats the difference ?

    MW are not doctors, they are more like specialized nurses. They cannot perform surgeries, but are skilled in labor and delivery. 

    I really like the practice of midwifery and the individualized/personal experience that I have with them. My MWs are never rushed and always spend at least 30 minutes with me. I think it just comes down to a personal preference (unless you are high risk).

    Doctors are on-call on a set schedule. They rotate. You get whoever is on-call on the day you go into labor. You don't have a choice. I think it's a good idea for you to speak with your OB (prenatal doctor) about the hospital policy.

    My OB delivers her patients if at all possible. She jokes that her husband always takes her on a cruise for vacation because as long as she's here she will deliver babies day or night. One of the many reasons I love her!

    Or they might guarantee it - and then be in San Francisco when the time comes! ;)

    We never did a hospital tour. We meant to but somehow never got around to it.

    At my hospital I didn't make an appointment or anything so we called in from the lobby and the nurses were so nice they just let us in and gave us this very friendly tour of the birthing rooms and the rokms where I will stay over night. It was just recently renovated this year so it looks like a hospital hotel. Lol. Plus they have a breakfast buffet in the morning. I'm actually excited to give birth now. Lol.

    My OB office had 20 obs haha, I do not care who delivers my child. As long as it gets done because the nurses are going to be the ones that care for you.

    My doctor's practice has about 4 OB/GYNs and 2 NP/MW.  I have been rotating through the practice where I can so that I am familiar with them.  While I am annoyed at times for choosing a larger practice I am also thankful that I did since I know that someone from the practice will likely be there for L&D.

    Exactly. The nurses are there with you for the whole ordeal. In my experience, the doctor showed up to catch the baby and then left directly afterwards. She might have been there for a grand total of 20m.
