Essure?

I think I am going to do Essure for permanent birth control. I am really looking for something non-hormonal so that maybe one day I'll have some sort of sex drive again. BCP are just not working for me anymore. For years and years they were fine. Now I can't seem to get one that doesn't kill my libido and doesn't create screwy cycles. Anyway, has anyone had this done? What was your experience? Thanks!

Re: Essure?

  • Do your research- there has been some good reviews and then some horrible reviews.  I decided against it. My husband is going to get the big V when his company goes on holiday shut down (if it happens this year).

  • I looked into essure and decided I was really uncomfortable with the idea of having a metal spring inside me permanently. When I looked further it seemed to have some seriously scary side effects and my OB said he doesn't offer it because he doesn't feel comfortable with the procedure yet. We ended up signing papers for a tubal if my VBAC turned into a C and when that didn't happen DH went in for a V.

  • I work in reproductive health care and talk to patients about essure often. its a really good alternative to getting your tubes tied because it is non invasive. with a tubal they have to knock you out (which poses risks) and there is a longer recovery period. Essure is a quick out patient procedure, they dont put you under, just numb you up where needed, no incision. the only thing is that it could take up to 6mo for the scar tissue to build around the coils, so you would need a backup (condoms, other BC). if your doctor doesnt do it call your local planned parenthood, they probably do it.

another non hormonal option is the copper IUD. the mains side effect with this is potentially heavy crampy periods.

also, a vasectomy is super easy for your husband to do (and less expensive and invasive)
  • @ELC098 with our insurance, we would pay out of pocket for the vasectomy at the current contracted rate with BCBS. Any birth control procedures I want for my body are $0 out of pocket, so we started looking into them. My doc told me that with a tubal I will have lifting restrictions as well. I wasn't aware of that. The lifting restrictions and the general anesthesia turn me off from the tubal, which would work immediately. Ugh, I'm torn between doing the Essure and shelling out the money for the vasectomy.

I have no advice, just wanted to say that I'm in the exact same boat and it totally sucks. Our deductible went waaaaaaaay up this year and I'm very seriously considering the tubal over the much easier vasectomy just because of the cost. It's so ridiculous.

I have a pretty close relationship with my OB/GYN. DH has helped him with computer issues and I'm very comfortable and trusting with him. I asked him what he would want for his wife (they're in a similar situation, age, kids, etc.). He said tubal at first because it's immediate, but as we talked he changed his mind to Essure because no general anesthesia and no physical restrictions with their young kids. I'm leaning toward doing it. I don't have a nickel allergy, so that should be fine. Ugh, it's just so...permanent.
