Oatmeal

So everything I read says oatmeal is great for helping with breast milk supply. I've never in my life ate oatmeal. Anyone have suggestions on how to prepare it or how you like it? I know I can google but I thought it'd be better to try it in ways others have that know it's good. Thanks!

Re: Oatmeal

  • I just cook regular oats according to their directions. Then, I add half a banana and a splash of almond milk. Sometimes I top with berries too.

  • From what I've read, oats in any form have not actually been proven to do anything for breast milk. That said, I like oatmeal and figure it can't hurt to eat it, so I've made it for breakfast every morning. I just make quick oats and add a little salt. Oats are oats.

  • I eat oatmeal a few times a week. I like it because it keeps me feeling full longer. I add brown sugar and milk. If I have fresh berries I add them and skip the brown sugar.

  • I eat it with peanut butter or cinnamon.. Mix it with apple sauce and cinnamon and it's like eating a cookie. I always make it with milk and not water though.. Water oatmeal tastes gross. Oatmeal and honey is good too.
  • I'm also eating out of the packets & think it's fine. Quaker makes a low sugar high fiber version of the brown sugar flavor which seems like a healthier option. I add chopped banana and pecans or walnuts. Yum!

  • That you have never had oatmeal blows my mind.  I tried to think of what to compare it to.... and I can't really think of anything.
I eat it everyday with a proportion of about one cup of frozen blueberries and 1/2 cup dry instant oats that I then put water in to my taste, which is more on the gooey side than the thick side. I microwave for 3 minutes, then add cinnamon and maybe a bit of stevia.
I also love the oatmeal at starbucks and mcdonalds, which you can get any time of day.
Do I think that it helps with my milk production?  yes, I do... but then again, I only notice that when I eat it for more than just breakfast, since I truly eat it everyday.
My mom eats it with greek yogurt and fresh fruit and almond milk.... to each their own with oatmeal.  Good luck!

  • I love eating it with blackberries, so good! Also brown sugar and occasionally peanut butter.
  • It's good with brown sugar, berries and cholate chips, sugar, cinnamon, and apples.

  • I don't know if it really helped, but I ate it religiously through the cool months last time. I do the regular or the "and cream" packets, whatever I have!

I don't like real oatmeal with water, though the sugary packets are OK. I'll use cow or almond milk. Mix in berries, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar, raisins/craisins/any driede fruit, peanut butter, Nutella!!, pumpkin puree (100% pumpkin from the can)...

I try to keep a variety, because oatmeal gets boring to me, but it is a good meal and filling. I'll often add milled flaxseed too. You can also Google recipes for lactation cookies!

Seriously, add a dollop of nutella and some sliced banana, I dare you not to like oats after that! Unless you don't like banana.. Or nutella (unthinkable!)

  • I've never had a problem with milk production, in fact I usually have too much and leak everywhere. But I also always get a huge craving for oatmeal right after having a baby. This time I have made multiple batches of oatmeal cookies (heavy on the oats) including an awesome Pinterest recipe that had natural peanut butter and Greek yogurt and minimal butter. Last time I was making a huge batch of homemade granola before the baby was a week old. I only occasionally make actual oatmeal. I also really like fruit crisps where I at least double the oats. They could easily be made with reduced sugar/fat too
  • I make steel cut oats on the stove. Yes it takes forever, but it's good. Then I add some brown sugar and some heavy whipping cream.mmmmmmm

  • I eat my oatmeal with sugar and butter.  These are mandatory - everything else is just for variety.
  • I add a splash of my hazelnut coffee creamer instead of milk. Gives it great flavor
  • When I cook mine, I add a splash of vanilla and a few tblsp of brown sugar. Then at the end, I throw in some blueberries. Super yum!
