Hydronephrosis / kidney stones

Hi ladies,

I am just wondering does anyone have any experience/knowledge about hydronephrosis? There doesn't seem to be a great deal on the Internet and doctors and midwives seem a bit stumped about it during pregnancy.

A couple of weeks ago (27 weeks at the time) I was experiencing sharp little pains in my right side and felt generally unwell, I spoke to the midwife who recommended going to the maternity ward for a check up, when I did I had all my observations done which were normal, urine normal and everything but because I bled after my internal examination they said it was policy to keep me overnight, lucky they did. I woke up being sick in agony with my right side, anyone touching it was unbearable! This continued and I had a scan which showed my kidney was dilated which is apparently common in pregnancy but the pain got worse and worse.

I was like something possessed screaming and vomiting in pain, the doctors were injecting me with pethadine to control it (which made me borderline unconscious and delirious asking where my dog was?!) also codeine, buscopan, IV paracetamol, tramodol and morphine inbeween... And also gas and air when I wasn't allowed pain relief alongside an IV fluid drip as I was severely dehydrated, clexane injections and steroids incase baby came early. This lasted for the best part of a week, it was like nothing I've ever experienced before and a lot of midwives said that acute hydronephrosis is known to be worse pain than childbirth. I was all set to have the operation which was a stent in my kidney which would drain the urine and I would have a catheter and discomfort until birth then suddenly the pain disappeared, there was a slight ache in my side but I spent a couple more days in the hospital with no pain relief and the urology team discided not to go ahead with the operation and discharge me, their only explainaion was that it was a kidney stone that I must have passed that caused the hydronephrosis but due to the pregnancy they couldn't have done a CT scan to see if it was a stone as the radiation can harm baby and their only advice was to drink plenty of water and go to A&E if the pain returns and I have a follow up scan in about a month.

I'm just left feeling bewildered about the whole thing it was like living a nightmare now it's as if it never happened, does anyone know more about it?

Applogiosies for how long the post is, I also want to raise awareness for you all to keep hydrated and keep your kidneys flushing your systems effectively!

  • Wow--this sounds absolutely horrible!! Nothing worse than when doctors aren't sure of best way to remedy a situation! Good luck and I hope it was a one time thing!

  • I've seen multiple pregnant pts with kidneys stones. It happens. You should also keep an eye on how many Tums (if you take them for heartburn) you are chewing as they are all calcium and can also contribute. When I was pregnant with my first, I had an OB give me a little lecture about eating too many tums and kidney stones. ;).

Anyway, fwiw, I've heard from many people that the pain from childbirth is easier and better than the pain from a kidney stone. GL and I hope it doesn't happen again.

  • I had kidney stones in December before I got pregnant and then again at the end of January when I was 4 weeks.  I had the same kind of unbearable pain that made me throw up.  It is far far worse than childbirth and I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy, definitely not while pregnant.  I'm so sorry you are feeling like this and I know exactly how horrible you feel.  Mine was just an ER visit, they gave me a liquid pain med so I could take it in smaller doses because I don't handle stuff like that well in normal doses and some zofran so I wouldn't throw up.  Glad I didnt have to stay in the hospital.  I was pretty worried when I went in.

  • I had/have hydro on my right kidney since about 24 weeks or so I think. At first it was really painful, but I guess my body adjusted because the hydro is still there but it no longer hurts.

I believe your situation is not uncommon in pregnancy. And I agree kidney pain is unbearable. From what I read about having the stent put in, a lot of people said the stent hurt really bad too. So I guess be glad you didn't need to have one and hopefully you get through the rest of the pregnancy without issue!

  • Oh my! I am so sorry you went theough this! Continued thoughts and prayers!!
  • I had hydro if the kidney at 30 weeks they found a large stone 1cm in kidney but beleive that isn't the one causing the problem there is most likely one stuck going towards bladder and was blocking urine from leaving the kidney and causing it to swell . They said the only safe option to relieve the horrible pain (they tried many pain killers and shots that were safest and nothing was working pain was so bad I started having contractions which they have me shot of mag sulfate to calm them ) was to have a nephrostomy tube put in. It's a tube they inserted in kidney through my back ( I was awake ) and it drains urine into a bag that is strapped to my thigh . Once I deliver they said I can get bag and stones removed. It's been 2 weeks and 3 days I'm getting used to it but my back is uncomfortable but nowhere near the initial pain I do not need any pain killers however I did continue to have small contractions so I am now taking procardia which seems to be working. Very hard time in hospital but just happy baby is safe that is most important!
  • @Supertiffy‌ I'm so sorry to hear that your still going through it, that was the operation I had scheduled to have which would of meant over three months with the stent however a couple of days before the op the pain just disappeared it was the weirdest thing. Is the stent uncomfortable? The urologist said that around 30% of people say it makes little/no different and causes more discomfort some times.

    Hope your bearing up okay!

And that you everyone else who replied, I do hope labor won't be too much worse than this pain it was unbearable!
  • I think the stent is a little different it goes between kidney and bladder and I heard that you can have painful bladder spasms with that but with that you don't have to have the urine bag around your leg. My doctor didn't offer that one he said he would have to give me anesthesia for it and didn't want to do that so instead I got the bag and tube. Once it was in place the initial kidney pain went away which was a big relief. But there is still just minor discomfort where the tube comes out if my back. And just getting used to the bag can't really wear pants or shorts so I got like every maternity maxi dress that was in sale !! Kidney stones are terrible but according to the nurses I am all set for labor after dealing with kidney stone pain :) hope you are all well and hope everyone enjoys their last few weeks of pregnancy. Can't wait to hold my baby girl !!!
  • Megrobsonx. Maybe your stone was small and u passed it :) I had stones many years ago and had about two days of awful pain and than it was gone they said at the time stones were tiny like salt and I passed them. Hope you remain pain free :)
  • I was just diagnosed with this as well yesterday. They gave me Tylenol and told me to lay exclusively on my left side. They are hoping this will take the pressure off the right kidney. I feel your pain and hope that we both get better soon! Thoughts and prayers are with you!

Sorry to hear this, I hope it's not too excruciating for you! Have they kept you in hospital? Thoughts are with you
