STMs - question about maternity clothes

So I want to buy some things for the few weeks in the fall.  I think I'll be going up a size in tops as I'm already getting tight in that department.

My question is pants.  My pants are fitting good around the hips and ass and thighs and in the belly, but should I go up a size due to anticipated belly growth?

Thoughts?

  • Last time, I was able to wear almost all of my dresses until the end.  Only like 1 dress didn't fit me.  Maybe I got lucky -maybe dresses are more forgiving.

Anyway, I plan on stretching my wardrobe by buying a few pairs of leggins/tights and then wearing cardigans so I can continue to wear my summer dresses. I may buy one or two long sleeve dresses that can also be nursing dresses -  only because I may continue to need them after the baby is born. I can't remember how long it took me to wear regular clothes again - maybe 4 weeks?

  • Thanks ladies!  I'm not wearing many dresses and skirts due to chub rub (hey-oh!) and I need a place to clip my insulin pump and wearing on my bra is just annoying.  So I've been sticking to pants with pockets.  Luckily my work dress code is very casual.

My plan for the fall is to rock cardigans a bit.  I'm more curious about the pants situation though and if I should go up a size.  I don't want it to look saggy in the ass!

  • With my son the only thing I had to go up a size in was shirts. My pants/capris etc fit throughout since they rode under the belly and the panel would stretch with my bump.

  • I'd put off purchases until you need them - if what you have fits now and you need/want to buy for fall, I'd go with the under-belly elastic.  This way your bump can comfortably grow but you're not walking around in frumpy/baggy/sloppy looking pants that are too big in the hips, ass and thighs - that will just make you look and feel bigger.  Don't forget, you'll still wear maternity clothes for a few weeks at least post-delivery but your bump will deflate immediately after and continue to shrink.  You'll want clothes that fit nicely everywhere else until you're back into your pre-preg size.  I did buy some over-belly elastic shorts and capris this summer that are getting uncomfortable in the bump area - just bought a pair of jeans for fall in my pre-preg size that are under-belly and they're perfect so I'm going to stick to that style if I have to add to my wardrobe for fall.

  • I have a variety of sizes everything from M to XL; I was given most of my stuff from friends or they were bought for less than $5 a piece at garage sales.  It wouldn't hurt to have a few larger sizes just in case.  Right now my L's fit good but I'll probably go up to a XL next month.

I wore the same pants through my entire last pregnancy.  They were definitely more snug at the end but I couldn't justify buying more pants to wear for a month or two.

  • I have been wearing the same two work pants with a belly band to hold them up. They fit fine everywhere else, but sometimes the band doesn't hold up and I get saggy. Went to Target and tried their under-belly slacks... ugh. Saggy everywhere.

I'll stick to belly bands, maxi skirts/dresses, and eventually tights when it gets cooler... :/

  • I didn't really have to "go up a size" per se in the pants, but I did have to switch from the elastic ones (under the belly) to the panel ones as my belly got bigger. The elastic just got too uncomfortable.

I wouldn't assume you would need to, but each momma and each baby is different. I'd hold off until it's necessary, but I hate buying mat clothes especially so close to the end.

  • I plan to live in my couple pairs of yoga pants in the fall.  (If I'm even feeling cold - apparently my husband keeps feeling cold and I'm sweating like a hog. This happened with DD).

I'd wait to get them until you've determined you've outgrown your current maternity pants.  I don't remember having that trouble last time (although my tops did get too small).

  • I have worn the same size throughout all my pregnancies although I have pretty much only gained weight in the belly area.
