Pregnant after a Loss

sleep positions?

I'm finding myself feeling paranoid over this subject - probably for no reason. I'm curious as to what your doctors/midwives say on the subject.

I have one provider who insists I stay off my right side, a midwife who says to stay off my back, and a doctor who says it doesn't really matter.

My doctor says our bodies "know" and we resposition ourselves as needed..., but I find myself forcing myself to sleep in my left side, and am developing a neck cramp..

How do you sleep?

ETA - I do have and LOVE my snoogle...

  • I alternate from my left to my right because my hips start to hurt. But I will have to ask my Dr today!
  • I alternate from left to right - usually only changing when I get up to pee in the middle of the night.  During 1st Tri, I did my very best to stay on me left side because it's supposed to help keep nausea at bay (because the stomach is to the left and it makes it harder for stuff to come back up).  Sometimes, I'll even wake up and be on my back, which is odd because I never fall asleep that way... lol

  • I've always been a left side sleeper, so that hasn't changed. Every now and then, I'll roll over to my right side for a little bit, or on my back. Haven't spoken to a Dr about it though.

  • I asked my dr about sleeping on my back because I kept waking up that way and at the time (around 20 weeks) he said that at least in my case it doesn't matter, if that's what's comfortable it's fine.  However as I've gotten further along it's become pretty uncomfortable to be on my back so I alternate sides now.  I've never heard or been told specifically to not sleep on my right side.  But ask your dr!

  • I alternate sides. One of the doctors at my practice said the left is the best, but right is okay too. As I've gotten bigger, it hurts my hips too much to stay exclusively on one side for the night.

  • I lay on my sides, either one. I do my best to stay off my back because I get light headed if I lay that way. I sleep with a pillow behind me to keep from rolling over as I have a tendency to wake up that way. I get paranoid that I'm cutting off circulation to baby with out knowing it.

I sleep any and all of the above mentioned ways for now, although on my back is starting to get uncomfortable and I'm not sure how much long I will be ae to do that for. Like others have mentioned my dr told me my body will recognize if I am cutting off blood supply long before it starts to affect LO. So for now I am just enjoying sleeping as long as I can between pee breaks :)

  • Right now I sleep on my belly since I am not that far along. My doc told me with my last pregnancy that he prefers for me to sleep on my side after 16 weeks but not to worry if I wake up on my back because our bodies would know if it was time to roll back over.

  • My Doctor told me yesterday they prefer left side
  • Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm a habitual back sleeper, I have to rely on my snoogle a bit more I guess.. :S

  • I debated that in my last pregnancy too. I was told to sleep however I felt comfortable and you will know to turn over far before there is an issue. I did find that if you put a pillow between your knees, it helps with hip pain.
