Wwj12d? Daycare edition

What would you do??
Cooper is in daycare and has been since she was about 6 months old. Her daycare is free for us because H's aunt and uncle own it(but they are literally never ever there) The problem is, dropping her off and picking her up is two hours every day because the daycare is 30 minutes away. I don't get anything done in between drop off and pick up because lunch is also in there and ya know I can't cut back on that so my productivity is so low. I'm tired of driving. So sick of it. It's about 70 a week in gas but 10 hours total of driving. H is starting to spilt the trip with me when he can but it's not every day. I'm also irritated with the daycare because Cooper has a new teacher literally every week and I can't keep up and they can't either. She's not learning anything and they won't wipe her when she pees so I'm irritated.
There is a daycare 5 min away that is 105/week. Teachers have all been there 5+ years. If we have to start paying then h and I will have to share a car which is totally doable just not ideal...
So would you keep driving and suck it up and keep her with her current daycare (where it's free and baby due this year is also going To get free daycare eventually when he attends) OR would you put child's needs (a reliable teacher-and one that actually cares about her hygiene) before the inconvenience of driving a ton and being on a tight budget....

I know it's my child my decision I'm just curious what y'all would do in my position.

Re: Wwj12d? Daycare edition

  • The driving thing alone would get me to switch; a big reason we moved to campus for my husband's final year of seminary was to get out of a long commute to and from the campus daycare for LO.  But free daycare is nice, I see the draw!

  • Y'all are on saying what I've been thinking! I am going to visit the closer daycare in the morning and see what I think of it. I think I just worry about what we will do when baby boy is ready for daycare and if we can afford him to go too. But that's about a year away so maybe finances will be better then?

  • I would also go with the new daycare. Those ten extra hours of time with my kid would be worth it for me. I'm sure you'll find a solution when it's time to put the second kid in daycare also.

  • It sounds like you won't be paying that much more in the end because you are already paying so much more in gas.  I think you and your whole family will really benefit from the time you'll save each day.  If it were me, I'd make the switch.

  • I would go with the closer daycare/tight budget option based on quality of care and having them teach her things as well as cutting down on the commute. I can't believe they won't wipe her! Is that the norm for daycares?

I hope you meet them, love them and can make it work if that is what you choose!

I've told every teacher she's had this month and H's aunt and they still are not wiping her. I can smell her under carriage when I take her to potty before we leave for the day. The weekends at home are fine cause we wipe her. I'm sick of bathing her every single night because of their laziness. It pisses me off

  • I would probably switch but if you are worried about budget with the extra cost could you possibly speak with YH's aunt/uncle about the quality of care and turn over rate? If they are not there often they may not be aware that things are starting to go down hill. If you have issues with things I am betting other parents do as well.

I've told his aunt about the wiping issue a while back and she said "well why doesn't she know how to wipe???" I said "well she's only been potty trained for two weeks and she's only two sooo she hadn't quite got it all down yet.." DUH. She said she would speak with her teacher but that was three teachers ago ....

  • With twins I'd do the free one, but $100 a week at the other is soooo cheap! Is this in the northeast? I pay almost $500 a week!
  • I would def go for the one that is closer. The extra time I'd save is worth it.
