Cloth Diapering

After newborn diapers

I have newborn sized gmd prefolds and workhorse fitteds.  When the baby is bigger it will have all of DD's kawaii one size diapers.
I've been thinking about the gap. I posted a while ago about maybe using kawaii p&n, but now i'm not sure.

How is the absorbency of gmd prefolds and workhorses in size small? Or should I jump to medium and skip small?

I know wait and see would be smart, but I have to go across the border into the states to pick up any gmd diapers so I would like to do that sooner than later.

Thank you!

Short answer: go straight to red edge medium prefolds.
    Long answer:
We went right to the red edge medium GMD prefolds and workhorses from the newborn. I had a couple of yellow edge small workhorses and a small size cover and that made for a really excellent fit early on after he outgrew newborn. DS has always been a pretty hefty baby so it felt like a waste to buy more yellows. The red edge was a bit bulky at first but now at 16 months and 25 lbs he is still fitting great in the red prefolds (he actually outgrew red edge workhorses pretty fast for some reason) and I really don't think we will need bigger any time soon.
ETA: I always snappi the prefolds and still have plenty of room for him to grow.

  • @BicycleBride10 did the medium prefolds have enough absorbancy early on?

  • I'm not exactly sure what you mean by having enough absorbency because just simply having more/larger diaper makes them more absorbent than the newborn size. And I'm pretty confident DS pees more now than he did early on and they are more than sufficient.

  • and now I'm going to give the opposite answer and say go with yellow. (but really I think it depends if you expect a big or small baby) I still am using yellow on my 17lb (really skinny) 13 month old, red seem way too bulky for day time.

Since you are wanting an option for between nb and os kawaii I think smalls would fit better until baby fit into the OS diapers. absorbancy is good in both red and yellow. more in red because it is bigger, but I've never had leaks with yellow. A red can last my guy all night.

  • Depends on how fast your LO grows. We went straight to yellows because we started off with a diaper trial, and then our order got shipped around 4 weeks of age. They probably lasted us until 13 weeks, but DS was on the low end of the growth curve. They still had plenty of absorbency but he started to outgrow the rise and it was getting hard to find enough width to Snappi them. They would probably still be good for stuffing pockets or trifolding, if we had wanted to keep using them for a while.

I do agree with PP who said that the red edge last a long time. That's because the growth curve flattens out, so while they are still growing and body shape is changing, they are still large enough to accommodate those changes.

When in doubt, consider flats for that in-between stage. They're great for bridging those size differences and you can use them later to stuff pockets or just change how you fold them on your growing child.
  • I kinda wish I would have went straight to the red edge but I bought them before really knowing what I was doing. DD started wearing them around 5 weeks and is starting to outgrow them now at 11 weeks and 12 lbs. She has a really chunky belly area so they don't have enough width to snappi.

They should last a few more weeks though. We're going to get the white edge though for wider babies.
