anyone request WFH when applying?

I'm a teacher looking for other opportunities.  Pearson has a pt content development position I'm interested in at their MA office, about 3 hours from me.  I'd like to apply and learn more about the position, but I'm not looking to relocate right now (might be interested in the future).  They also have an office about 20 min from me.  Would you ever apply for a position but if contacted for the interview let them know you'd be interested in the position if it could be done as WFH or in a different office?  As a teacher I'm not very familiar with how the business world works.

  • I would wait until you get an offer.

  • I might apply for a position and put in my resume (objective) that I am seeking a telecommuter/work from home position. That way if they look at your resume they could see that and decide whether they want to interview you for the position. I just think it is a waste of everyone's time to apply for a position, interview, and then tell them you'll only take it if you can work from home.

Could you call their HR and inquire about the position?

I would suggest something in-between.  Go ahead and apply for the job without saying anything about WFH.  Most companies do some sort of phone screen through HR or the hiring manager before they bring someone in for an interview.  During the phone screen is when I would ask if I could WFH or work from another office.  Express that you are VERY interested in the job, but you just aren't looking to relocate at this time and is there anything that can be worked out.  Do you ever think you would relocate to that area?  If the right position came open at that company, would you consider it?  Things to think about before the conversation, because they might come up.

As a hiring manager, if someone asked to WFH or at a different location at the time of the offer, I would be very ticked off.  It might make me reconsider the offer, even if they were the best candidate - especially if I could tell that was their plan from the beginning.  But if they were up front from the beginning, then I would have time to think it through and whether if would work or not.

    Good luck!
I think this is a great advice. I am not a teacher but I was approached with my current job, at the very first meeting I was up front with them that eventually I would like to work from home one day a week. The opportunity was great but a huge negative was that my commute was increasing from 20 minutes one way to 45 minutes to an hour one way. The commute is definitely one of the biggest sources of dissatisfaction with my current position but I appreciate my management team working with me and allowing me the flexibility to work from home once a week.

It also helped that I wasn't really looking to change jobs and at the first meeting, I was highly skeptical that I would accept the position mainly because of the commute though.

  • I think banks81 advice above is absolutely right on.  Apply, and then if they interview you, You might as well address it because they'll see your physical address on your resume anyway and probably wonder if you were looking to re-locate.  So definitely address in your first interview.  Best of luck!
