I've always called it corn on the cob (from Ohio). I lived in Michigan for a few years and never remember it being called sweet corn, but maybe I didn't pay much attention.
Technically you are right...sweet corn is the type of corn we eat (corn on the cob, frozen, canned, etc.) while field/dent corn (which is most of the cornfields in the US) is used for feed, ethanol, corn syrup, etc. I am from MN and we call it both.
There was no option for all of the above! I grew up in a farming community, so depending on context, the'sweet corn' signifier was necessary since most of the corn grown in north America is not meant for people to eat.. 'Corn on the cob' is a style of food more than it is a type of corn. But it's all corn...

I call it sweet corn and he calls it corn on the cob. He says the sweet corn thing is a Michigan thing so I am curious if it is a regional thing.
I live in Michigan and I do hear people call corn sweet corn a lot, but normally when they are referencing getting it from a Farmer's Market. Store corn= just plain corn. Farmer'sMarket=Sweet corn.
I interchange corn and sweet corn but voted sweet corn because everywhere you find it, stores, roadside produce stands, and farmers' markets, it's referred to as sweet corn on the signs. And I live in the Cornhusker state too

I have lived in Michigan my entire life and I would just call it corn. When fresh corn season starts my mom will sometimes refer to it as sweet corn or corn on the cob to indicate the distinction that you can now buy fresh corn which tastes much better. I might use corn on the cob but never sweet corn. It is actually on the menu for tonight and I just wrote corn.
Ok, Wisconsin born and raised over here! It's corn on the cob, but sweet corn is just as acceptable. It is sweet corn because it's not field corn (grown for livestock). If you aren't eating it off the cob, it's usually just corn, but also accepted as sweet corn.
I'm from Iowa and my husband and I actually own a "sweet corn" business! If it's not called sweet corn then it's just field corn which is not for eating!
Corn. It's a general term referring to that plant. The one pictured is sweet corn, but I would only call it that if I needed to differentiate that it's not the one grown for feed or fuel or one of the South American varieties that aren't sweet. I would refer to corn on the cob if it's been cooked and is served on the cob, not cut off. I'm from California.
After 30 years, I'm just now realizing that candy corn is really a kernel of corn. I just thought it was a 3 colored triangle shaped piece of candy with a catchy double c name. Well, don't I just feel like the town idiot over here. Fml.
Cracking up over here haha. But to make you feel better that stuff happens to me all the time. Example I thought the saying "it's a crapshoot" was about actual crap like poop not the game craps.
Re: Help solve a debate....corn
What do you and DH call it? Either way, tell him we said you're right
If you're talking about eating it, corn on the cob, as that's the description.
But maybe that's just a Southern thing?
