Trouble TTC

Should I start Clomid?

AF arrived yesterday so I went to the doc and he gave me a prescription for Clomid. Which I was all gung ho for trying until he put a little fear in me. I guess I didn't do my research enough. I know what it's supposed to do and how it's supposed to work but I didn't realize that it is hormones.

Back story is that I have BAD varicose veins in both my legs. 8 years ago I got a blood clot in one of the superficial veins in my left leg. I was then taken off the pill and was told I couldn't ever take again because of the hormones in it.

When at the Dr. office yesterday we talked about my legs and my history, again, then he gave me the prescription. He told me that since I didn't have a clot in the deep vein I should be fine.

My question to all of you is has anyone else had something similar? I understand all of the other side effects and am ok with those. I'm just unsure if it's safe for me in that way. I wasn't able to get a hold of my leg Dr. yesterday and if I start the clomid this cycle it will be on Sunday. I'm inclined to wait till next cycle and talk to my leg doc first.
Sorry this has turned into more of a rant, but I'm curious if anyone else is in the same boat.
Thanks

Re: Should I start Clomid?

  • I'm sorry, I don't know the answer but I see why you would be concerned. My only thought (and I am no pharmacist of course) but I believe clomid is a drug that actually works on your brain, to stimulate your own naturally occurring hormones. It is not like a birth control pill, which contains hormones in and of itself. Good luck!

  • Are you working with an RE or an OBGYN? Did he mention monitoring? Have you had an HSG and your husband an SA?

    This!
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • Clomid works differently than bcps, however since your dr even mentioned it would make me a little nervous. What kind I doctor are you seeing? How long have you been ttc( sorry I can't see siggys I'm mobile). If it were me I'd wait until I had more answers before taking it.

  • I would be more concerned with messing up my fertility on clomid than blood clots.  On top of the above advice, you need to be monitored on clomid with ultrasounds, including a baseline ultrasound before you start the clomid.  Go see an RE.

  • Why did he prescribe clomid?  There's also a limit to how many clomid cycles you can do in a lifetime, so don't waste it before getting the proper testing done.  You should have CD3 bloodwork done.  You should also have a HSG to rule out blocked tubes because clomid won't help you if your tube/tubes are blocked.  Your husband needs a SA.  All of these things need to be done before prescribing you fertility drugs.

Clomid can thin your lining and if your lining is too thin, an egg won't implant.  Also, if you have cysts left over from the previous cycle, it can cause them to grow too large.  If you overstimulate on clomid, you are at risk for high-order multiples.  This is why you need to be monitored with ultrasounds.

Many OBGYNs will say the risk of the above issues is low and they will prescribe clomid anyways.  I had an OB say that to me, but I knew better.   My RE is adamantly against prescribing it before knowing more information.  It's not worth the rush, you can get an HSG done between CD 5 and 12 and get CD3 bloodwork and ultrasound done next cycle and if they determine you're a candidate for clomid, you can start it next cycle.  This also gives your partner time to do the SA.  Good luck!

  • The ladies have already done an outstanding job of giving you advice so I have nothing to add.  I am very happy you are listening to them and looking for an RE though.  I wasted 2 years of my life letting my OBGYN tinker with me before referring me to an RE.  If I'd only joined this board earlier these women could have saved me a ton of frustration by telling me what they've told you.

    Good luck!
