My little guy has a pacifier and I had someone criticize my choice in letting him have it the other day. I was really annoyed! I know it's hard to break the habit. I had to do it with kids in my daycare I worked at many times. Lots of crying to deal with. My theory on it is that I've never seen a 15 year old with a binky or sucking their thumb! They'll get over it.
My DS prefers to suck his entire hand. Not exaggerating. He'll just be relaxing or napping and put it in his mouth. I'm afraid it's going to get stuck one of these times because I'm not sure how it fits to begin with!
@Meg&Austin True, but it looks like it may be too late now. How are you supposed to keep your little one from doing it? I get what you're saying, but I wouldn't worry too much. Plenty if kids suck their thimbs and stop before it gets embarrassing.
DS is a thumb sucker too. Most times it's his whole hand as well. I'm good with self soothing so I don't have a problem with it. As pp said as long as he's not 18 doing it we will all live

My Aunt is 49 and she still sucks her thumb. DD seems to like her thumb so this makes me very nervous as well!
I have a thumb sucker which isn't ideal but I didn't offer a paci so what did I expect. He started sleeping better so I was like whatever. He doesn't do it all day. At the point it's when he's tired and wants to sleep.
And in the end the bigger of a deal you make it when they are older the bigger of a game it will become. Let social pressure and their peers take care of it.
Mine sucks her thumb and while I may regret it later, right now I'm relived she's finding some ways to self-soothe. She's a fussy baby and anything that helps, I'm all for.
Ya she started about a month and a half ago with the fist sucking and fingers down the throat all the time. Now she has found that thumb is pretty nice to suck. Im trying to incorporate her lovey now with bedtime to tey and keep her hands busy.
My theory is I would have a much easier time with removing a paci than trying to remove the child's thumb. My nephew was a thumb sucker they even put hot sauce on it to make him stop. It however did not work cause he learned to love hot stuff lol.

I used to suck my thumb and scratch my nose until it bled (and scratch off any resulting bandaids). I just think at least DD doesn't do that!
