BLW'ers - new group!

We started a group where we can get together and chat, post pictures, ideas, recipes, etc. If this is something you do or you just want to learn more about it, please come on in!

And for your troubles, here's yet another picture of Baby Boots chowing down on some dainty egg salad sandwiches at his Granny's house.

Re: BLW'ers - new group!

  • I'm not online a whole lot, but I'd like to join to try & learn more to see if I want to start this with my LO :)

  • Yay! I'm so excited. LO will not eat puréed foods and BLW is not something I had heard of til the bump.

I wish we could do this with C, but he just can't do real food yet. Every week we introduce it to him, really small bites, like crazy small. He ends up gagging and throwing up every time. I don't even know what to do anymore, I just feel like he will always be on pureed foods. I'm bringing it up to my pedi at our 9m appt next month.

I'm just so jealous of your babies who can handle food right now.
DD gagged all the time and threw up the odd time when we first introduced finger foods. It took about a week of consistently giving her finger foods for it to subside. I just made sure I was always there to fish sormthing out if her colour went something other than pink.

We have this same issue. We've been doing more mashed foods, as kind of a step between puree and table food. He's still struggling a little with it and gives me disgusted looks, but I'm hoping that helps bridge the gap...

@colerose Hopefully things continue to look up! I know you said you've been doing really small bites. Have you tried really big bites (like a 1/4 of an apple or a whole peeled carrot) so that he is in even more control of what goes in his mouth and he can gnaw on it to get used to it without really ingesting much? That helps with figuring out depth too (how far back to put the food) since he can immediately pull it out if it goes in to far (dirty mind....ha).  BLW isn't so much just about table foods, but there are some really important guidelines for size of the food, too.

And some babies do just throw up when they gag and it's just a sucky thing. Em does, too (though she mostly has gotten over it, every once in a while if she gets too much, she'll gag and throw up).
I've been thinking about going this route. I did give him a veggie stick of something but I can't remember what it was. He just sort of looked at and put it in his mouth and then threw it on the ground. I get nervous with the bigger pieces that he is going to magically chew off a huge bite and he will choke. I'm basically a nervous wreck around him eating and I'm sure that isn't helping
This is sooo me. I'm really trying to be more laid back with DS2 than I was with DS1. It is so hard. I used to break the fast dissolving puffs in half because IMO they didn't dissolve fast enough. I was super over paranoid!

  • Great idea for a group. I have slowly been introducing table foods but it is nerve racking.
@BootsOrHearts‌ how small are you making his egg sandwiches? I never knew ow how big or small to make things...

When you're just starting out you want to think fairly big pieces. The size of their hand or bigger. And 'stick' shaped is handy because they can grab the bottom in their fist and put the top in their mouth.  So for a sandwich, cut half a sandwich into quarters or into 'fingers' they can grab. If the crust is chewy or tough, cut that part off. As they get more adept with food you can make the pieces smaller.

The egg salad sandwiches were like those fancy dancy mini sandwiches that were made for the party. They had the crusts cut off so it was perfect for him.

  • I tried joining and it keeps giving me an error. Any idea why?
  • It says something about a duplicate key entry
  • @ColeRose‌ try a chunk of a cucumber end. . Easy to hold. LO loves gnawing on them and can devour it quite well.

We did skinny french fry sized steamed veggies at first , not wedges. It was a good size and easy to pick up. I wasn't worried about big hunts and her choking.

  • @ColeRose‌ - have you tried baby mum mum crackers? They dissolve easily like the puffs and my LO takes a big piece and nibbles on it or stuffs it in her mouth and has never had choking issues with those. You are doing great though, I still think food before one is just for fun so no need to worry yet!
Like boots said too- big pieces of watermelon or other fruit are great for them to gum on.
  • @ColeRose‌ it's also super helpful to watch some BLW gagging videos on YouTube. I watched some so I would realize the difference between him choking and him just gagging on something.

  • @BootsOrHearts Can you resend me the invite for the BLW Group? It doesn't give the option of joining the group in the invite for some reason.
