First Injection So Proud of Me

Well last night my DH popped my injection cherry. This is my first IUI with injection cycle with my brand new RE. I am taking menopur then an HCG trigger. I have this really weird fear that the needle will break off inside me....this goes back to weird acupuncture experience/accident in college. But DH actually stuck me. I have a new found respect for people that stick themselves with needles daily. I am really hopeful this cycle my FSH was 5.2 and Estrogen was 45. My RE was really impressed with my FSH level being that I am 36 and 3/4. Yes, this is how he refers to my age...lol. So hopefully I respond well to the meds. Still so shocked at the price of my meds we have 50% coverage and meds were $750. I jokingly asked the pharmacist if I was paying for everyone in the pharmacy. Well there goes the school shopping I wanted to do.
Me: +35 DH: +35
TTC: Since January 2013 
DX: PCOS. Severe Endometriosis, Unicornuate Uterus w/only left tube and left ovary, Pedunculated fibroid (on the outside of uterus) and Anovulation. All conditions diagnosed 8/13
TX: Metformin
DH DX: MFI - low morphology, low motility
Ultrasound shows both kidneys in spite of UU. 
HSG showed clear tube on the left side. 
Lap Surgery performed 1/9/14 to remove fibroid and endo (Stage 3)
  • IUI# 1 June 2014 started 100 mg of Clomid - 7dpiui Progesterone: 13: BFN
  • IUI#2  July 2014 started 100 mg of Clomid - 7dpiui Progesterone: 5.75: BFN
  • Natural Cycle - so shocked to be in 2WW - 7dpo Progesterone: 15.5: BFN
  • Working with new RE starting injectables in late August.
  • IUI #3 August 2014  w/ Menopur: BFN
  • Finally ovulating on my own!!
Waiting to start IVF hopefully

    Yay!  Getting through the first shot is a big milestone.  I still haven't done one myself, I don't know if I could.  I'm grateful my husband enjoys being involved and taking care of all that. 

    Question for you...  I have my first menopur shot tomorrow.  The nurse said it burns - does it?

    @ky29‌ yes actually it did burn, but it was more like a stinging sensation. It didn't last too long though. It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. The nurse kept reminding me not to inject in the same place each time because it will burn even more.

    DX: PCOS. Severe Endometriosis, Unicornuate Uterus w/only left tube and left ovary, Pedunculated fibroid (on the outside of uterus) and Anovulation. All conditions diagnosed 8/13
    TX: Metformin

    Did you ice it first?  She said that might help (even though it may be more 'mental').  I have to do mine at 6:30am, so I'm hoping it's not that bad.  I'd rather not have to get up and walk to the kitchen before the shot, haha.

    I've been giving myself injections since January. It's really not bad and you get use to it. My husband is a Dr and so I made him do the first few but with his work schedule I had to learn to do them myself, and now I barely even flinch. I found that when giving myself Menopur if I pinched up the skin when giving the injection and then letting out the pinch as it went in it burned less. Good luck!

    This is the part I'm most terrified of. I have a huge fear of needles, I seriously don't know how I'm going to do it. Yay for you!!!

    I stick people with needles all the time at work, but never myself.  I definitely hesitated the first time!  I'm interested in what your acupuncture accident was!?!

    That's great, good for you!  As others have mentioned, the first time is probably the hardest. 
    I was less afraid of the needle, but more nervous about doing it correctly.
    The Ovidrel shot, the only kind that I've done, has a very tiny needle.  Is that the same for the others?

    That's great!! I will say that every single day with every single injection I felt a slight nervousness but I always felt so proud after finishing each one, LOL!!

    Me: 32  DH: 33  Married: March 2004

    July 2006: started TTC
    2008: HSG (normal), couple rounds of clomid through gyno
    2008 - 2010: dragging my feet out of fear and procrastination
    October 2010: first consultation with RE, dx PCOS and fibroids (DH slightly low count/motility)
    Oct. 2010 - Dec. 2012:  In DENIAL! avoided the issue because I was scared of surgery
    January 2013: returned to RE, fibroids grew significantly
    February 2013: second HSG, fibroids pushed on tubes which blocked them somewhat
    March 2013: MRI to determine what type of surgery may be necessary
    July 29, 2013: fibroids (5) removed via robotic laparascopy
    August 2013 - Nov 2013 : benched due to recent surgery

    IUI #1, Dec. 24, 2013, BFN 
    IUI #2, Jan. 25, 2014, BFN
    IUI #3, Feb. 25, 2014  BFN
    IUI #4 canceled due to lack of response to letrozole
    IUI #4.1 April 28, 2014, BFN
    May 16, 2014: wtf consult, start prepping for IVF in June and add injects for one last IUI in the meantime
    IUI #5 started letrozole and bravelle but canceled after HSG led to new diagnosis
    May 21, 2014: third HSG, tubes blocked, one at the beginning, one hydrosalpinx??
    June 11, 2014: consult, approved to move on to IVF because the hydro is not completely blocked therefore allowing fluid to move through slowly rather than backwards
    IVF #1 August 8, 2014 - 3dt of 2 embryos, BFN
    September 17, 2014 - 4th HSG, the right tube is very patent (open!!) dye went straight through this time. Weird!
    October 2, 2014 - started metformin treatment
    November 14, 2014 - blood work, brought A1C down from 5.8 to 5.5
    November 26, 2014 - RE finally back from vaca and reviewed my chart, no more IVFs for rest of calendar year
    December 1, 2014 - Right after Thanksgiving, I called a new clinic and got in right away! Plan for IVF
    December 17, 2014 - ER! 29 retrieved (!!), 16 mature, all 16 fertilized (ICSI)
    IVF #2 December 20, 2014 - 3dt of 3 embryos, BFN

    We are done with treatment unsuccessfully. :(

    Congrats on you first shot! I gave myself my first one about two weeks ago and it wasn't as bad as I thought. It's more mental because I didn't even feel it. Good luck this cycle!

    @kristyn831‌....I'm not trying to scare anyone away from acupuncture. But against my mother's advice I went to a whole in wall acupuncture place in college. It was the kind of place that also did massages and based on their clientele I'm pretty sure they provided "happy ending massages." One of the needles broke off inside my arm. The guy kept saying I must be stressed and that the rest of the needle will make it's way to the surface in a couple of hours like a splinter. Fast forward the next morning I am in the ER with an infection, they had to remove a chunk of skin from my arm. I still have a scar til this day so I'm always so scared that a needle may break off inside of me. When the health department went to investigate the acupuncture place they were gone! After that all my mom had to say was acupuncture and I would listen to anything she suggested. 17 year old me was so daring.

    @TTCBabyJ  That is a crazy story!!!  It's horrifying yet hilarious (in a only-funny-because-you're-ok sorta way).  The stupid things we did in college....

    I think the menopur shot is the worst, so that's a big milestone!

    Just wondering, was the injection painful at all? The shots are absolutely my biggest fear.

    @TTCBabyJ‌, that's scary!  I have done acupuncture at a licensed clinic and have to say that's it's a great experience.

    @Hollowvic‌, it's relatively painless since most injectables are subcutaneous.  But never having given myself one, it was hard not to hesitate.

    Yay! Grats =) I will probably be doing my first sometime next week... I dont know if I can do it myself I dont mind needles just the thought isnt appealing to me to shoot myself up lol =) FX for this cycle for you!

    Congrats!  I just went through this myself a few weeks ago and it was not easy!  Just another way that IF makes us stronger...(I'm an eternal optimist :-) )

    @hollowvic Just wanted to chime in here...a friend gave me the suggestion to start icing my stomach when I take my meds out of the fridge (about a half hour before injecting).  For the first shot, i was so scared and then when I actually did it I didn't feel a thing!  Ice REALLY helps.  Even without it, it's not that bad, but if you have a few extra minutes, I really recommend the ice.

    Congratulations! That seems like a big step -- I haven't gone injectables yet but I'm sure if/when I do I will also feel very proud of myself after the first one is done! I'll be cheering you on for a successful cycle!

    - Ultrasound to look at "lay of the land": normal
    - Blood work: normal
    - OPKs and ultrasound to confirm ovulation: Yes
    - SA for DH: Normal (a couple numbers on the low side of normal)
    - HSG: Normal
    - Doing several cycles of Letrozole, TI and progesterone
        - Aug cycle of Letrozole, TI and progesterone came back with a BFP-MC at 7 weeks.
    - Benched until Jan
    - Starting Letrozole, TI, Progesteron and HCG Trigger in Feb cycle

    The nurse at my RE's gives me ice before my trigger shot, and it really works!! Congrats on your first injection :) I had to have a glass of wine before my husband gave me my trigger shot a couple weeks ago!

                         - Both of us on antibiotics to treat ureaplasma
                         - Blood work - progesterone: 15.9, TSH: 0.89, FT4: 1.2, Prolactin: 33.4 
    Feb 2014   - Endometrial Biopsy - Normal
    Mar 2014   - Prolactin: 22.9, referred to RE
    Apr 2014   - First RE appointment, put on medication for high prolactin levels 
                      - Clomid (50 mg) 1 follicle, Trigger shot - BFN
                      - Second SA - All Normal, borderline morph (5%) 
    May 2014   - Clomid (100mg) 2 follicles, Trigger shot - BFN
                      - blood work: Estradiol: 32.7, FSH: 5.3, Prolactin: 14.1
    June 2014  - IUI #1, Clomid (150 mg), 3 follicles, Trigger shot - BFN 
    July 2014   - IUI #2, Clomid (150 mg), 4 follicles, Trigger shot - BFN
    Aug 2014   - IUI #3, Femara 2.5, 3 follicles, Trigger shot (first time done by DH!!) - BFN
                      - Hysteroscopy - Normal
    Sept 2014 - IUI #4 Femara 2.5, 1 follicle, possibility of another one, Trigger shot - BFN
                       -Progesterone test 4 DPIUI - 7.8...started crinone.
    Oct 2014 - IUI #5 Follistim 150 3 possibly 4 follicles - Trigger Shot - BFN
    Oct/Nov 2014 - Follistim 150 with TI & Trigger shot - ???
