Irish and Scottish Baby Names

My husband and I come from an Irish and Scottish background. Our first daughter's name is Rory. We love her name because it is unique but not hard to pronounce or write. We are stuck on what to name our future boy or girl and I was hoping you ladies had some ideas. For boy names, we like Brody, Rhys, Reid or Ryder. For girls we like Riley, Isla and Rowan. We are not 100% sold on any and would love any new suggestions you have. Thank you!

Re: Irish and Scottish Baby Names

  • I love Rhys but that will take a lot of explanation through his life because of that my top two of your boss names are Ryder and Reid. Girls names I second Isla and I like Rowan. I prefer it as a boy name but I think it makes a beautiful girl name too.

I'd suggest my kids name (Ronan) because I love it so much but it's skyrocketed in popularity for some reason and I'm not sure how willing you are to go with a name that could hit top 100 this year.

  • Reid is our top boy name right now. I love Riley, but where I live (Michigan) it is super popular right now. I know 4 little girls recently born with that name.
  • I second Reid and Isla.  The only Rowan's I know are boys, not that it makes a difference, I know it can be for either boys or girls.

Irish/Scottish girl names I love: Aine, Teagan, Keira, Taryn

    boy names: Cameron, Caden, Kevin.

  • I'm Irish, if you ever need help with any traditional Gaelic names just holler! :)
  • I love isla, arwen, brody, and Reid :) I feel like they're strong names. When in doubt look up the meanings. That's always helpful to me

  • I like Brody, Reid, and Isla.
  • Isn't Rhys a Welsh name? Not that it matters but if you wanted something more Irish or Scots maybe it isn't such a good fit.
  • Just for your consideration, you put your daughters full name out on the internet...

That being said, I like Rhys and Island.
    Anniversary

  • I really like Reid. My dad was pushing for our second son to be Padraig (after the golfer Padraig Harrington). I am not one for popular names or I would really like Isla. If I am not mistaken, it is really trending right now.

  • Thank you all for your suggestions! You have reconfirmed my love for the names Reid and Isla. But keep suggestions coming if you have some!
  • Original post has been edited. Thank you!
  • Love Reid and Isla (my guy and I are both Scottish/Irish freckle-faces and he's a strawberry ginger) so we're looking at our culture for names too.

Brody I love, Sean and Owen as well. Cameron (but we have a niece Kameron already).

But come on, Isla Fischer? I have a total girl crush on her silly pretty red headed self :)

  • I like Rhys, Reid, and Isla the best.
  • Not that this is much help, but I love them all! They're all pretty unique and honor the heritage. There are some crazy Scottish and Irish names out there a and I love that you took into account the pronunciation of the names and how it'll effect the baby. :)

  • @umbcpt‌ My name is Taran, pronouced like Taryn:)

I like Killian for a boy. We're pretty sure that's what we're going with. I also like Ryan. For a girl, I love Rowan! So cute!

  • Isla is very pretty. I love Maeve, Saoirse, & Grainne. My DH is so traditional with names I'd never get to use them :)

  • I like Isla and I'll second Maeve. For boys I always liked Ewan and Killian, but from your list Reid would be my choice. My son is Kaelan, so that is also a name I like ;)
