waking up in a puddle of milk?

This question is for a friend of mine. She's just became a new mama and at night is soaking through nursing pads, bra, shirt and onto the bed. I remember this happening to myself when I was a new mommy too and I believe your body just learns to stop making as much milk.
But does anyone have any other suggestions I can give?? How to make it stop? Is there anything besides nursing pads? What to put on the bed to keep the milk from leaking to the mattress?
Thanks in advance!

  • It took a couple of months for me with both, and as PP said nothing can be done.

Like PPs said, nothing really can be done.  Your friend can sleep on a towel or use overnight nursing pads/disposable nursing pads (disposable ones absorb better) and just change them whenever she wakes for MOTN feedings.  The leaking will get better with time.
  • Agree with the other posters, nothing that she can really do. I was amazed at the amount of milk that would soak my shirt, especially the first few times. Seriously looked like someone through a gallon of milk at my shirt.  Pads and stuff help, but I just slept in a tshirt and on top of a towel to protect my bed.  It went away after the first few weeks...I think? Leakage still happened for awhile after that and even still very occasionally happens.  But nothing like those early weeks!

  • I use to sleep with a burp cloth in my nursing tank. It was the kind with the built in bra (I think the term is shelf bra? Idk) and that helped a little. We have a bunch of the just one you burp clothes from target that have a really soft side and are kind of thick.

This for me too - overnight nursing pads, + a burp cloth (gerber cloth diaper).
