2nd Trimester

Pregnancy plus catching a cold (or very bad allergies?)

So I rarely complain about symptoms that you get during pregnancy. But omg do I feel terrible today. I thought it was really bad allergies now I think it's a cold. My doc said I could take Zyrtec so I did this morning. But its not doing much to help. Thankfully my throat's not on fire anymore. I brought up alot of phlem (sorry TMI) that seem to help with the pain. Anyone else ever got sick and know of anything that kinda helped them to feel better?

Re: Pregnancy plus catching a cold (or very bad allergies?)

  • I've been battling a nasty cold for over a week now. It sucks. I ended up giving it to DD and MH so we're all sniffling and coughing. The only thing you can take is tylenol I thnk. I also drank tons of hot tea with honey and lemon and ate lots of chicken soup. Nothing really helps with a cold other than time anyway so that's that...

  • *sighs* i figured, its okay I figured I have to ride it out. Water's been my best friend today, soup actually sounds pretty good lol. Thanks!
  • Could it possibly be a sinus infection? If you got on some abx it may help clear it out.

  • Kylie: Great idea on the humidifier I think that's might what have started it. hubby keeps trying to give me spicy stuff lol.

MrsLa: I wasn't sure about till this morning, I brought some stuff up that was kinda green >.> and I blew my nose it was yellow. So...if it keeps up I plan on calling the doc first thing tomorrow.

I took another zyrtec in the middle of the night and so far I feel a little better than yesterday, but we'll see how well today will go out.
  • I had a nasty cold/cough in July. It lasted for 18 days. Nothing worked for me. My OB gave me a couple of 'safe' meds but after I tried them once and they didn't work I didn't even bother. I just rested, lots of fluids and lots of cough drops.
    Feel better!

  • I also had a nasty cold that turned into a sinus infection (cold symtoms turned into MAJOR sinus pain and burning, and I couldnt sleep for 3 nights straight). Before the z pack, all I was doing was zyrtec, tylenol, neti-pot (if you havent tried that you may want to consider...its awesome), and lots of fluids. Feel better!!

  • Im going through the same thing right now. i have white patches in my throat and my chest BURNS! Antibiotics dont work and tbe dr can't diagnose it. He says my body is iver reacting to a germ in my system. This wasn't quite the pregnancy symptom I was expecting.
  • So I haven't still shaken this thing 100%. I think I got my chest congestion gone, so now I just need to take care of my nose/sinus. Have any of you ladies heard or have tried a saline nasal spray and or benedryl (for sinus?). I'm worried it's just at bay and will come back with a vengence as a sinus infection. That happened to me a few times a couple years ago.
  • I have gotten sinus infections this time of year for my entire life but have just learned to be very proactive. Here are a few things. If your nose is stopped up the worst thing you could possibly do is blow it. It aggravates the swollen capillaries and they will swell tighter. This is even worse in pregnancy because of the very common gestational rhinitis caused by increased blood flow.

Get a neti pot and put saline solution through your nasal passage every day. You can also mix some warm weak salt water (1 tsp salt for 1 cup water) and snort it for the same effect but just not as comfortable. This will prevent infections and treat current issues. 100% natural. You can also gargle salt water to get rid of a sore throat. Breathe right strips will also help keep the passage open while you sleep. I love a warm bath and then slathering on the vicks vapor rub if I really feel sick.

Do not wear contacts and flush your eyes out with warm water and a saline rinse before bed. This helps so much. Hot water with honey and lemon for a soothing healthy "tea" is also great for the immune system and colds.

I never take any allergy or cold meds and I won't start now that I am pregnant. Being proactive is the most important thing and keeping a healthy diet and exercising help a lot too. Good luck I hope this helps some!
