Higher mortality rate past due date?? Tirigger warning

An old friend posted a warning on Facebook about going past your due date...she has two friends who had stillborn babies, one 5 days late, 1 seven. Tragic, yes, but I wasn't aware risks were any higher until 2 weeks past due. Aren't due dates inexact (not sure if that's a word) anyway? It kind of bothers me that she's posting a "warning" without any facts behind it. I only made it to 35 weeks, so I have no experience with those last weeks. What are your thoughts/knowledge on the topic?

  • I'm not sure what a trigger warning is? Do I edit the title?

  • Did I do it properly?
  • I thought that was fairly common knowledge. That is the reason they do bi-weekly NSTs on post term mothers.

  • Thanks for the info...according to the article it's only a major issue after 42w? All of this stuff makes my head spin...
  • I didn't think doctors let you go past 42 weeks anymore?
  • @tgrimes1980‌ I went to 39w 6d. My doctor talked about inducing but that was due to A's large size. I always got the impression even if he wasn't big that if I went to 42 weeks I would be induced.
  • @CFox815 IIRC our boys were the same size, 9lbs 6oz. Isn't that what C weighed? A was 21.5 inches long.

    I believe it was at our 16 week ultrasound they started talking about how big he was, his head in particular. As time went in my OB said she was concerned about shoulder dystocia if we went much past EDD because of his size. She swept my membranes at 39w 4d, and I went into labor that night.
  • Sorry for the wall of text, I'm mobile. And if anyone would like the link to my NP website it will provide medical backing

  • I was induced at 41 weeks. My doctor would have allowed me to go to 42 weeks but no longer than that, due to placenta deterioration. They also told me I 'd be given ultrasounds to check on this if I made it to 42 weeks.

    This exactly.

    I was induced at 40w3d. My doctor wanted to induce at 41 weeks, but scheduled induction times were already filled up since that was right before Thanksgiving weekend. I would have much rather waited until 41 weeks but took a backseat to inductions scheduled out of convenience (still bitter about that). Went on the waiting list, and got a call to come in right away because they had a spot. I could have chanced a spot opening later, but with my amniotic fluid low I decided to do it. The induction was a disaster, DD's heart rate kept plummeting, so ended up with a c-seciton. I still think about "what if" sometimes, but in the end just thankful it ended with a healthy baby.

  • So incredibly sorry for your loss md. I'm truly sorry I brought up such a difficult topic...my dd was due in dec, and I didn't join this board until much later. My heart aches for your loss.
  • ::hugs MD::

    I went overdue, and I worked very closely with my OB to determind how long it was "safe."  I was induced at 10 days overdue (I knew exactly when I ovulated).  My NST and ultrasound started to show that things were just starting to be "not ideal" - and I actually remember reading MD's story, so I was OK with being induced when I was.  I didn't want to be induced too early.  There was meconium in the water, but my hospital was great, and had a nicu team right there when she was born - they took her right away and sucked everything out to minimize any potential damage.

    My family tends to carry long, so my "anecdotal evidence" is that carrying long is not always bad.  My brother was 17 days late!  (and he was the second!).
