Lamictal RX & Pregnancy

Is anyone taking the medication Lamictal? I take it for a seizure disorder but know it's used for migraines as well. I haven't had a seizure in 7 years and don't see a doctor any more but was wondering if anyone had feedback on the drug and pregnancy. I don't have my first OB appointment for another few weeks so in the meantime...

Re: Lamictal RX & Pregnancy

  • I don't know anything about this drug, but I know depakote which is also a seizure med is known to have severe side effects (spina bifida is one).  I wouldn't wait until your appointment, I would call  your OB and ask.

  • Thanks so much ladies!
  • I really just want to share my experience to those who are worried about pregnancy and Lamictal, as I was throughout my entire pregnancy. I'm on both Lamictal and Keppra, both in extended release form.  I was 4 weeks pregnant when I had a grand mal seizure and somehow by some miracle I was blessed with a healthy baby boy last Friday. Before my grand mal seizure, I was seizure free for 2 years, which is a long stretch for me. My Lamictal dosage throughout my pregnancy was 800 mg per day and my Keppra dosage was 2000 mg per day.  I was prescribed 2 mg of Folate to combat the increased Lamictal and Keppra in my system.  I've read a lot of forums but most of them covered very small doses.  My doses are obviously quite large and my seizures are obviously not fully under control so I'm hoping that if you're taking less than I am or around what I am then this will put your mind at ease.  There's always hope.
  • My psychiatrist wanted to prescribe me it for bipolar disorder but wouldn't because I am breastfeeding

    It's a BOY

  • Yeah, even though both my high risk gynecologist and neurologist said that I'd be able to breastfeed, the hospital's pediatrician said I couldn't and hearing just one "no" is enough to make me not take the chance.  They say it has long-term neurological development on your child.  So I definitely feel robbed of that.  Luckily I didn't have my heart set on breastfeeding but the fact that it was a privilege taken away from me really sucks.
