Spin off: Teachers - What names do you come across most?

I've been curious about this, and wonder how much it varies by region.

So far, my girls have been the only "Grace" and "Evangeline" in their classes. Grace knew of another Grace back when she was in second grade, but she was in another grade.

Re: Spin off: Teachers - What names do you come across most?

  • I teach 9th grade, so my students were named about 14 years ago.  But the most common ones I see are Cameron (all boys, although I know it is getting popular for baby girls these days) Joseph, Michael, Caitlyn/Katelyn/Caitlin, Amy, Jessica and Samantha.  These are the names where I tend to have more than one in one class.

  • Edgar, Oscar, Christian, Diego, Brian for boys.
Joselyn is the only double I've ever had for girls.

@colliebabe - Wow! Amy and Jessica still?

My mom did the unthinkable and gave me a total early 80's name, and while it's not a "bad" name, I do not like it for me. So I don't use it, and am changing it. Actually, no one calls me by my given name except family, which I don't mind. But I haven't gone by that name in about 5-6 years now.

ETA: I was *supposed* to be Samantha, and then she changed her mind right around my due date. :sigh:

  • @aeonlux - Yes it's really weird, you would think by 2000 people wouldn't be using those anymore.

On a side note, my husband actually suggested Amy as a girl name for us. Uhhh, no.

  • I loved my name due to the fact that not many people shared it with me. That is until my junior year of high school when a counselor got me and a male student mixed up. -__- darn unisex name!! Ha I still love my name.
  • I'm a preschool teacher, last year I had two Greysons (a boy - Greyson) and a girl (Gracyn) and two Lilas (Lila and Lilah). This year I have two Dylans and two Olivias. Olivia is definitely a popular name in my school as is Sullivan (both for boys and girls). Also another class randomly has two Sloans which I never expected to be a double name.

  • My mom just retired from being a director of a preschool a couple months ago. Lily, Olivia, Sophia, Jacob, any kind of Caden, Aidan, Jayden names were among the most popular I'd say based on her school.

We will all have a VERY common Hispanic last name so that's why I really hope there won't be many Adalina's...

I suffered the same fate! I changed my name to my middle name and never looked back. Probably why I have such a hate for trendy names today. It sucks when people can pinpoint your exact age (and how not creative your parents are) by your name alone.

Wow Leo, really? I totally thought we got away with a not so common name with DS.

  • This year? High school teacher, suburban Chicago: Joseph, Michael, Kaitlyn (and spelling variants). I also oddly have three Trevors.

Hmm seemed like a lot of those when I was in elementary! I think I got lucky my name was of a different generation. There were only 2 of us in high school but I had three friends moms have my name..
  • @leosmom25 - We had 3 Leo's in 3 years, but there isn't one this year and there weren't any in JK this year, so maybe it was just a fluke?

:) our little girl is going to be Ava.

I teach elementary and I get a lot of aiden variations. Ayden, Aiden, Aden, Brayden, Kaiden, Jaiden, Caden, drayden, Hayden, etc. I usually get more unique girl names...a lot I've never heard until I meet the child actually!
  • My school is a k-8. I teach 7/8 and have a couple Emily/Emilly names, a couple of girls named Grace (which I have at least one of each year) and a few Alyssa/Alysa/Alissa variations. For boys, they are all pretty original and don't have any repeaters.

In the elementary, the upcoming trend seems to be Ava. There are 5 in k-1. There are also a lot of older names: Henry, Scarlet, Ruby, etc. I know this is the new trend, so it isn't surprising, I guess.
