December 2014 Moms

i need someone to talk me down (placenta previa)

So I recently found out I have placenta previa, and my initial reaction was totally calm, as my doctor was calm about it and said 90% of the time it moves up by delivery time. I've been good and refrained from sex as directed by the doctor, but all of a sudden I'm really freaked out that something bad will happen to me in delivery! Can some of you ladies that have been through this talk me down from here? Thanks!

Re: i need someone to talk me down (placenta previa)

  • My BFF had placenta previa with her first pregnancy.  She was worried, scared to death.  Ended up moving up and she was able to have a vaginal delivery with no problems.  Stay positive momma!  There is power in positive thinking!

  • Thing is....either it fixes itself and you'll be fine to deliver vaginally OR it doesn't fix itself and you'll have a C-section.

It's not like they will let you have an issue if they are monitoring it now ya know?

  • Thank you ladies. Even though I know o shouldn't worry, it helps to have someone tell me it will be ok!
  • It is an extra complication, yes. But there is nothing you can do. You can't control it, or will it to move. Try to focus on the happy fact that you know you have it, and the doc is keeping an eye on it, and will be able to plan accordingly. It is going to be ok.

  • I was diagnosed with it at my 20wk u/s too and I can't help but worry but there truly is nothing you can do about it. I'm getting rechecked at 30wks and it can't get here fast enough. 3 down 7 to go!

  • If it doesn't move up then you get to pick your baby's birthday. Also if you have a c-section for this reason, you will be a great candidate for a VBAC for your next pregnancy. Try to stay positive.

  • My cousin has a Placenta Previa and is due in September. Her's hasn't moved so she is having a CS next week, which is apparently 3 weeks before her due date. I guess if they let her dilate she could hemorrhage. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I don't know what VBAC is...sorry I'm new at this! I'm mostly scared that they'll say it's moved enough, when it hasn't, and I will hemorrhage. I've always been scared of surgery, but right now I'd feel better about a c section.
Again thank you to everyone for the pep talks! You guys are awesome!
  • A VBAC is vaginal birth after cesarean.

I had partial previa with my first - it moved. Chances are yours will too :)

If you're worried about this (the possibility of them thinking it moved enough when it hasn't), that's a great thing to talk to your doc or midwife about at your next appt. Let them reassure you about it; they should even be able to tell you how far from the cervix it would have to be for them to consider it safe.

In the meantime, hang in there. The overwhelming odds are that it will move well out of the way and be no problem for your before delivery day.

ETA: when I get worried about worst worst case scenario stuff like that, it helps me to remember that just because my mind came up with something doesn't mean it is going to happen. At all!

I was diagnosed at 18 weeks with Marginal Placenta Previa. I did everything I was told and at 23weeks it moved up. I'm currently 23 weeks and 4 days. Just got the magical call Thursday. I was totally freaking out too. But stay positive. Follow doctors orders and it will more than likely move as your uterus grows.
    Good luck!
