STM+ question about dilation

I mentioned this in the random thread but wondered if anyone had any experience like this.

Yesterday I was having vague low pelvic discomfort all day but then I started having sharp periodic pains at the top of my baby bump. My OB wasn't sure what to think so brought me into L &D triage. Baby looked great with no contractions on the monitor. They are doing a urine culture with a question for UTI but they also checked me and found I was 1 cm dilated but it was still thick and long. The OB recommended "taking it easy" over the weekend and getting lots of fluid and to come in for a recheck this week. I'm worried because I'm not even 29 weeks, but I don't know if being a little dilated early is normal especially with 2nd baby. Any thoughts?

  • Thanks @lissydee I was hoping I was worrying for no reason. Hopeful that when they recheck it is the same

  • With my first I walked around at 2-3 cm for 2-3 weeks. Granted I was 37 weeks at first but I was a cm dialated at my 34ish week appointment too. I stayed that way until labor kicked in.

  • In first pregnancies women usually efface before they dilate, but in subsequent pregnancies it will often dilate first.  I would take it easy, but would worry more if you were effacing rather than just being fingertip dilated.

  • A lot of women stay dilated just a bit after their first baby - since you aren't contracting I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I have friend who were dilated to a 5 for literally weeks. Ive also had friends dilated to a 1 and had their baby that day. In short - dilation before active labor is not an indicator of when you will go into labor. :)
