fat rolls

So DS is kinda chunky...well he's very chunky. Its a full time job keeping between rolls clean. Specifically his neck rolls and extra chins. They seem really red and irritated we try to keep them clean and dry but clearly it is not enough. Anyone have any tips or tricks to keep theur chunky monkey clean and happy??

Re: fat rolls

  • Both my babies have extra chins and get yeast growing in there. (Can smell it and it's shiny red.) We call it neck cheese. Gross, I know. I try to wipe it regularly, keep them in bibs and change them throughout the day and dry really well after baths. When it's gotten particularly bad, I've put medicated diaper rash cream on it and it seemed to help. Baby powder is NOT recommended due to the chance of inhaling it.

  • I never thought it could be yeast. It does smell terrible, we call it his "fromunda" neck. It definitely smells like old cheese. Of course we are staying away from the baby powder. He goes through several bibs a day and whenever he gets a diaper change we wipe between them. I have tried this balm thats for chapped baby cheeks and lips, it has helped a little.
  • You can try athletes foot cream to help with the yeasties. Once it's clean and dry, coating it with Vaseline will help.

  • My girly has a very cheesy neck too. We bath daily (and she absolutely stinks by the end of the day, do know where new baby smell comes from...)
  • We use dish towel bibs and tommy tippy bibs 24/7

Also you could try a "liquid baby powder" not sure if that's what you'd call it exactly but it goes on like a cream and dries into a soft talc powder (but not loose powder). I've used a very small bit under DDs chins when it got really bad. Freah Body makes a good one it was a bit expensive but a little goes a long way.

  • I used coconut oil spread or whatever that stuff is my sister gave me some and the redness and irritation was gone after the first time I put it on
  • Medicated diaper rash cream here as well---only when inflamed.
We usually can control it with daily baths and wipe downs! Gotta love the cheese rolls!

  • Balmex and Desitin if he's looking red. Usually clears it up overnight.
  • We wipe her out twice a day with dry cotton flannel wipes. When it's really bad I have an old wicking Tshirt I cut into thin short strips and tuck into the folds. Wicks the moisture right out. That was a tip from my PICU nurse BFF.

  • If you use wipes to clean out the rolls you have to follow up with a dry wipe! The moisture from a wet wipe will get stuck in there and facilitate the swampiness becoming more irritated. I actually don't do anything about it but started giving them baths once a day (as night time routine), soap every other day, and washing it out then. I also make sure I do not get lotion under their necks, and I make sure it is pat down dry. When I do the night bottle I try to have it so their necks are exposed to air for a little bit (like one min) to make sure there is no trapped moisture.

Also, instead of bins we do burp clothes folded up and right under the bottle on their chin so that breast milk can't even reach past their chin. I just smelled their necks today and it doesn't smell like anything! Only took 2 months ;)
