XP: Bribery and Rewards

So I need to bribe Reese to take her medicine. They taste AWFUL---I licked it and could barely tolerate it--I can't imagine a 3 year old ever liking it. So right now I am in full on bribery mode to get her take it less begrudgingly where she doesn't gag and almost throw it up. I need ideas. I am going to see if I could teach her to swallow a pill and put the medicine in a spoonful of applesauce--I will ask her doctors on Monday about it.

It has to be something that can instantly be given---like right after it. Once in the morning and once at night. Right now we are doing 10 gummy bears for each dose. But even that she would rather chose no gummy bears over taking the medicine.

It is til Thursday--so 12 different bribes.

Then we have a week off, and it starts again for another week.

Re: XP: Bribery and Rewards

  • Applesauce, yogurt, ICE CREAM!? Only 12 more times, 12 more time, 12 more times. You can do it.
The problem is right now she has NO appetite. Today she ate 20 gummy bears and 1/2 pancake. Same yesterday (and the pancakes were silver dollar ones). I even offered her ice cream for dinner and she told me NO!

  • What about something like a sticker book? Or watching a favourite show on the iPad, etc? Can a compound pharmacy add a flavour to the medicine?
  • If she's not hungry then do small toys. And wrap them all. Have her pick a wrapped present. Then its a surprise what the prize is and the anticipation will get her to take the medicine.

    A small littlest pet shop
    Glow stick jewelry
    A mini Lego set
    Those stamp crayola markers
    A cool flash light
    Perler beads
    A new water bottle
    Bath tub paint
    New book

  • I agree with @supertoots. I think it has to be a brand new wrapped toy. The anticipation and excitement will work hopefully. I'd hit up the dollar store or the dollar spot at Target.

  • I am looking for new things---I have some that I already bought for Hanukkah and Christmas, so I don't really want to go to those things. She has gotten some things since she was sick, that we just put away--i may bring those out.

She took her morning dose with complaining but less gagging then past. I put a cup of water, a handful of gummy bears (to chase the flavor away) and a brand new play-doh set.

  • When DD#1 was on a NASTY suspension we mixed straight Hershey's strawberry syrup with it. It was strong enough to overpower the gross medicine but that was just an antibiotic so 10 days at most :-??

Absolutely in love with our 'big' family!

I'm also a proud Auntie to a crazy little girl, her brand new baby sister, a little man on his way in the next month, and a sweet little mister we will miss forever!!!
