School me on Stainless Steel

So we are moving into a new house and are redoing the kitchen. My husband is set on wanting stainless steel appliances... I am just fine with White. I feel like you are paying way more because it is silver. They are the same on the inside.

So do you have them now? Want them?

Are they really harder to keep clean?

  • we have white appliances.  I don't ever want stainless steel.  We have stainless steel trash cans and I have to use special stainless steel cleaner wipes to clean them.  The fingerprints would drive me nuts.

  • We had them in our last house, although they weren't actually real stainless steel (which is a good thing because real stainless is harder to clean). I loved them. They looked really nice IMO. I'm not really a fan of white appliances, so if we didn't do stainless it would be black.

  • We have stainless steel.  I personally like the look.  Yes, they do show water marks or fingerprints, but are easy to wipe down, which I would do anyways.  I think the ss fits well with the other finishes/style of our kitchen.  I personally found the extra expense worth it to me because I like the aesthetic better.

  • I have stainless steel. I like the look, but I will never do it again (they came with the house).  I cannot keep the water marks, streaks, or fingerprints off of my appliances.

  • We have stainless steel, I liked the look before kids, but now they are just a smudgy mess all the time!  Not sure if I would do stainless again...
  • WAY harder to keep clean, but some brands make a "clean steel" that doesn't smudge as much. I personally actually LIKE white, a lot, but it's not as "in style" and didn't go with our house. We had some existing stainless we needed to match. If I had a cute, colorful cottage-y kitchen I would totally go with white appliances.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some stainless is magnetic and some is NOT, so you have to check that if you want to put things on your fridge. We can't, which DH loves b/c it keeps it looking nicer, but I miss the space.

  • I love the look of them and the upkeep really isn't that hard. I think white/black look dated.
  • But if black and white appliances look dated now, It's likely that stainless steel may look dated in 5 or 10 years. When I got married in 2004, no one had gold rings and everyone had platinum. Within a few years styles changed and by 2010 Yellow Gold was very much in style. You never know, so go with what you like. You have to live with it everyday!

The oven range I wanted only comes in stainless steel. I love it and a quick wipe with a damp microfiber cloth gets rid of any smudges, water etc. I think white appliances can look dated. Edit: if I did go with white I'd go with a la cornue cornufe range/oven. But probably pricier than stainless steel.
Damn you I'm obsessed with that range/oven now!
    Sorry! But aren't they gorgeous?
    They're amazing...
  • Get the fake stainless or "clean steel".

  • We have stainless and I love the look, but hate the upkeep.  I end up wiping them every night to keep fingerprints and water marks off.  I have found that using Pledge for stubborn spots works well. Otherwise, I just wipe down with a microfiber cloth.
  • I'd also go for the Stainless when given the option over the standard white/black finishes.  At the end of the day, there's a reason why professional kitchens require stainless in order for it to be NSF Certified, which is an argument for home too. It may be a pain to keep appliances clean, but so are windows right now. IMO it's easier to keep the Stainless clean over the pattern in the white/black appliances.
