There's no handheld monitor component, but Foscam security cameras are wifi-compatible and your smartphone becomes the handheld device. You just have to download an app to view the video feed. It works anywhere, so there's no range or signal like there would be with a true baby monitor.
We started out with the Summer Infant Baby Zoom, and I would NOT recommend it. The video quality was horrible ( over wifi and on the included monitor), the camera kept dropping off wifi, the app crashed multiple times, and the PC interface is awful. We returned ours for the Motorola MBP36 -- not wifi, but we like this one much better. Motorola does make a wifi version though.
I have both an iPhone and an iPad and really like the app called "Baby Monitor." I can log on from anywhere and see my LO when she is in her crib. I can even activate the light if it is dark in her room. I think the app was only $1.99. I'm about to move but will definitely be getting a wall mount for the iPad in our new house.

We have the same model for DS--the Motorola MBP36. We got it as a gift when our daughter was born and it has worked great for both babies! I haven't needed all of its features though (like the lullaby options, etc.) so a simpler model could work just as well.
For DD, we have a Belkin Netcam, which is wifi capable. You download an app for your phone and you can log in to view over a computer as well. It has a motion sensor that will capture an image if it senses movement and e-mail it to you, which is pretty hilarious if you have a toddler.

So you literally just use your iPad? Or does it hook up to an actual monitor?
