My big ass baby in a swing

Yup. I go a biggun'! Haha.

Ok, really, we bought a new swing yesterday (this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=23851326&cp=2255957.2273443.2255983.3224660&parentPage=family#showReviews )  for grandma's house and lo loves it. We also have another swing that is similar. Both of them say in the instructions (yep, I'm the mom who reads even the fine print!) not to use the swing once lo sits up on his own, around 6 months, or after lo reaches 25/30 lbs.

My lo is 4 months and already 18 lbs 2 oz, and 26 inches long. soooooo......it seems like lo won't be able to use the swing in the very near future! I want lo to be safe. It just seems like he would still want to be in the swing at 6/7 months, maybe more, if he is anything like my friend's lo's. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this? I'll stop using once he reaches the weight limit or it seems unsafe, just wanted input. If you can't use the swing anymore what do you do instead?

  • Loading the player...
  • Depending on the swing you can use it longer, my kids all used theirs much longer then that. Just make sure to buckle him in.

  • Huh, mine only states 20 lb weight limit. (Not the same swing, but same brand)
However, having said that...LO is 15 lbs and 27+ inches. If he's like his brother (which he seems to be) he will be hanging off the ends soon.
Neither one likes to be in it, so I'm about to pack mine up.

A friend of mine has a swing similar to yours (with a 20 lb weight limit) and her 9 month old loves it. (Her LO is the same size as my 5 month old)
Because her 9 month old is very squirmy and active (doesn't crawl yet) they ensure she's buckled at all times.

  • We never got a swing for Levi, the little froggy seat is already loaned to neighbor days away from delivery.  Current forms of entertainment are exersaucer and the walker.  I wish we had a johnnyjumpup, but no good door frames for viable location.
  • We are still using the swing for now and making sure he is buckled in. We are about to put up the RNP, but also use a johnny jump up for when I have to take a shower. He bounces in the door way of the bathroom while I get ready.

  • We use the swing when she's tired because she sleeps well, but she 5mo, about 18lbs, and 27in so she'll out grow it soon! We just got her exersaucer in the other day and she loves it!! She also enjoys her Johnny jumper but for shorter periods of time.

My dude was 22lbs at 4m and he's 25lbs now at 6m.  He can still use the swing.  He's probably more likely to outgrow it developmentally than he is size wise.

ETA: and by outgrow it developmentally I mean it will be like trying to wrestle a 200lb octo-gator to strap him in.

  • Thanks girls! seems like a lot of you are doing jumpers and exercausers instead. mine likes the swing primarily for naps and is at that awkward stage where he can only 'exercause' (haha! word!) for maybe 10 mins before his muscles are too tired to hold him up anymore. he loves it though! hven't tried the jumper yet. gotta get one!
Thanks for the input! here are some pics as a bonus :) happy friday
