A little freaked out....

So after telling my father who isn't really excited about my pregnancy at the moment, he proceeded to tell me that giving birth had caused my biological mother to have a stroke....im not really sure if that's possible but has anyone heard of this happening or had it happen? And is it a genetic thing? I'm just a little freaked out about the whole idea... Help! :-S

  • I would think it's pretty rare, but yes, it can, and does happen. I would let your doctor know just in case she/he finds it revelent for your birth. I would assume they would monitor you a little more in a situation like this.

  • It can definitely happen. It is very rare, and there really isn't anything you can do to prevent it. Try not to stress out about it.

  • Let your doctor know but don't borrow worry (haha easy to say I know) also...sorry about your Dad that's kind of harsh.  My Dad is happy for us but the first words out of his mouth were "Oh yeah btw watch out as your mom had multiple losses before you were conceived..." thanks Dad...couldn't have been a little more kind in that delivery??

  • Do you know how a stroke happens?! Either a clot goes to the brain and blocks blood flow and then that part of the brain dies from lack of oxygen, OR your blood is too thin and you get a bleed in your brain because if it and then that area of the brain dies because the bleed causes a lack of oxygen. There is very little genetic component to stroke, unless you have a cardiac or blood clotting condition. There are A LOT of things that can go wrong during L&D, don't stress yourself over a bunch of remote maybes. Your dad is an ass for scaring you like that.

  • It can happen but I do not think there is a genetic component to it. I don't think this was the best time to give this information to you because pregnancy is scary enough without giving you horror stories about something that happened to your mother. I think it was a bit insensitive. Sorry you have this to worry you now.
