Job Opportunity

Three years ago I interviewed at a local Ivy League college.  The hiring manager loved me, but couldn't afford what she thought she needed to pay me (so she said).  Fast forward 3 years... she sent me an email yesterday about a position at the school she thought I would be a good fit for.  Should I interview for the hell of it?  I can't start until January unless they are willing to cover my maternity leave, and if I were them I wouldn't want to hire someone that's 30+ weeks pregnant.

Side note, it could also be a cut in pay, but I'd be able to commute with my husband instead of going in the opposite direction.

    Well. They technically can't NOT hire you ONLY because you are pregnant, but obviously they can get around that. I almost feel like I'd write her back and say "I'd love this opportunity, but you need to know..." and tell her that. But. I don't know if that's the smart thing--it's just what I'd probably do. I'd feel like I wasted her time if I showed up hugely pregnant when she wasn't expecting it.

    I would interview. Like PP said, what can it hurt? Discuss your issues about pregnancy and maternity leave in the interview though not before.

    Definitely interview. January isn't really that far away and depending on the job they may not want you to start right away anyway.

    I say go for it! January is not that far away and the process takes time anyway. Plus I'm sure that if they like you enough, they'd be most likely willing to wait for you.

    I agree.  I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to interview, but having worked in higher education for a long time (10+ years) I know that they often are wanting to fill a position within the semester vs waiting (there are exceptions, but you are essentially asking them to hold a position for 5 months). Schools are notorious for being crazy slow with their hiring process so it is entirely possible that they won't interview until October- especially considering that the fall term will start soon.  Also, I've been in the midst of my own job search and have learned that there really isn't a right or wrong answer about when to disclose that you are pregnant to a potential employer.  You aren't legally required to disclose, but if you know now that you won't be willing to cut your leave short, you would be better off being upfront so they aren't caught off guard.  My experience has been that even negotiating 2-3 weeks off and some flexibility for another 3-4 weeks has been difficult.  Good luck!  It sounds like an exciting opportunity!

    Go for it! You can always interview and see if it's the right fit for you and them. Even if it doesn't work out this time she will probably keep you in mind in the future.

    I ended up not applying.  Last time I applied to the school I had to go to 4 separate on site interviews during their hiring process.  I would have to take time off, which would mean going unpaid even longer during my leave (which is already tough since I'm the breadwinner).  The woman that reached out to me did offer to continue keeping her eyes open for me... Hopefully something comes up at a better time!
